Serpent Mound

Serpent Mound This is the Official page for Serpent Mound State Memorial. Serpent Mound is the largest surviving example of a prehistoric effigy mound in the world.

Serpent Mound is an internationally known National Historic Landmark built by the Ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio. Stretching 1,348 feet over the ground, the beautifully preserved ancient earthwork depicts larger-than-life sinews of an immense serpent, with an intriguing oval shaped head. This earthen monument is anywhere from 1000-2000 years old, and the cultural identity of its American

Indian architects remains wrapped in mystery, as does the exact ceremonial purpose behind its creation. Time, however, has not dampened the earthwork’s artistic affect on those who gaze upon it. The Serpent continues to elicit humility, wonder, and awe – drawing tens of thousands of visitors a year from across the country and the world. In addition to the Serpent, the park preserves three burial mounds of the Adena and Fort Ancient Cultures, and ancient village sites.

OHIO OPEN DOORS EVENT - We’re participating in Ohio Open Doors on Thursday, Sept. 10th, 2026!

Come and take a rare evening tour of Serpent Mound with Site Superintendent Bill Kennedy on Thursday, September 10th, 2026. Due to popular request, we will have extended hours on this day and no parking or admission fees after 5:00 pm. The tour begins at 6:30 pm at the Picnic Shelter and will last until 8:00 pm. The gift shop and Visitor Center will remain open until 8:30 pm and the site will close at 9:00 pm after sunset.

Great news!

People often ask why we selected the sites we did for Rock Art: An American Story. There isn’t a single answer to that question – and usually it’s a combination. Sometimes it’s the grandeur or location of a site, sometimes it’s the site’s intriguing imagery, sometimes it’s because we h...

It was a great pleasure to be able to hear from tribal partners at the Summer Solstice today. Chief Glenna Wallace (Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma) and Chief Ben Barnes (Shawnee Tribe) spoke to visitors about the history of their tribes. We were lucky to catch this photo of Chief Wallace from the Solstice sunset.
