Twenty years have passed since the tragedies that occurred on September 11, 2001 and the pain and sorrow that remained are wounds that still run deep within our nation. Today, the City of Pharr joins all those around the country to honor the lives that were lost on that fateful day. As we recognize the lives that were lost, we are reminded of the love, compassion, and hope that can be brought about by a unified community. Today, as a city, we are united to #NeverForget all those that lost their lives that September morning.

Every Saturday since last September, parishioners and friends of St. George Orthodox Church in Pharr have been cooking up vast quantities of handmade baklava and other international delicacies, preparing for this year’s International Festival. The International Festival, held on the 2nd Saturday of December each year, is a much-anticipated event for the local community, families and Winter Texans alike. The event features the sale of a variety of homestyle foods and beverages from many parts of the world, including Greece and Eastern Europe. The festival is a fun, educational event for the entire family. Free entry, parking, children’s activities and a wide variety of entertainment, there’s always something for everyone to see and do. Activities and information will be shared by the Museum of South Texas History, IMAS, the McAllen Public Library, Texas Master Naturalists, Texas Master Gardeners, UTRGV CHAPS, the Lambs Loom, Gem Valley Farmers Market, Milkweed & Monarchs and more. “Two by Two Petting Zoo” will be available for children from 10 a.m. – noon. This year’s entertainment schedule will include the wonderful UTRGV Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, playing holiday favorites, as well as the much-beloved Mariachi Nueva Tradicion. The entire, exciting entertainment and activity schedule can be found at: stgeorgetxfestival.com/entertainment.html The Festival is a great place for holiday season shopping. Pick up some unique items created by local artisans, handicraft and farmers market vendors. Everything from local honey and preserves, to handmade soap, beeswax candles, Eastern European folkart and handcrafted wood items will be there to choose from. If you’re interested, take a free guided tour of St. George Orthodox Church and the learn about the lovely icons, an ancient liturgical artform. Whether you like fire-grilled souvlaki skewers, piroghies or pastitcio, stuffed grape leaves or cabbage rolls, there is sure to be something you’ll love to eat. There are vegan and vegetarian options for some of these foods. A tent area, tables and chairs provided a comfortable area for dining. Frozen versions of many international specialties are also available – for you to take home and enjoy later. Bring a cooler along in the car! Besides baklava, baked goods from around the world will make your mouth water. Besides being a tasty snack, these also make great holiday and party gifts. International soups – both vegan and with meat – are one of the festival favorites. Some people even take these some home to enjoy another day. Want to just sit a while and watch the performances? Pick up some Russian tea, Greek or regular coffee and some special baked goods from the Russian Tea Shoppe, and you’ll be ready to relax and enjoy. Freshly baked scones and muffins will start out the morning, so come early – spend the day! Another reason for the festival is a food and fundraiser for the very active St. George Food Pantry, which serves over 100 families. Bring monetary donations, canned goods, non-perishables, new or lightly used blankets, coats, children’s clothing or toys, and receive a homemade cookie as a “thank you” in the annual “Give a Can; Get a Cookie” campaign. This year’s International Festival will be held on Saturday, December 8th, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at St. George Orthodox Church, 704 W. Sam Houston in Pharr. To learn more about the festival, see their website at: stgeorgetxfestival.com/index.html or on Facebook at: facebook.com/St.GeorgeInternationalFestival/
“Whimsical, thought-provoking, deftly crafted, "This Is Me, Not Robert Creeley, Speaking " clearly showcases Paul Bussan's genuine flair for deftly crafted, succinct, and memorable free verse. This brief compendium of his work is very highly recommended for personal reading lists.” -The Midwest Book Review, June, 2017
