Time magazine is reporting today that: "The fatality rate in ICE custody reached a 22-year high in the opening months of this fiscal year, according to a report published in the medical journal JAMA earlier this year. Between the beginning of October and Jan. 19, the latest date in the report’s analysis, 18 immigration detainee deaths were reported; since then, at least 17 other people have died while being held by ICE. By comparison, 3 people died in ICE detention in the full 2022 fiscal year, per the report."

Both chambers of Congress are now in recess for the rest of the Summer, even as prices are still higher on groceries, gasoline, and so much of what we need every day. Worse yet, any return from recess will be brief, with Congress expected to be mostly out until the elections. Now is the time to plan to hold elected officials accountable at the ballot box in November. If you are eligible, make sure you are registered, and make a plan to vote with your friends.

Today, we remember the 23 lives lost, 23 more hurt, and the unquantifiable damage done to our communities in El Paso, Texas. 🕊️

On August 3, 2019, a gunman targeted Latinos and immigrants in the deadliest attack on our community in modern history, spurred on by white nationalist and anti-immigrant rhetoric.
