Man Bites Dog for 50 points! đź“°

Students in Foundations of Student Media at Plainfield High School put their headline-writing skills to the test in a race to 500 points. Working together, students had to determine what makes something newsworthy and then turn those ideas into headlines that were creative, attention-grabbing, and, most importantly, made sense.

It was a fast-paced way to learn an important lesson in student media: a great headline gets your attention, but good journalism still has to tell the story accurately.

Chemistry Honors students at Plainfield High School got their first experience working in the MegaLab as they safely learned to light and use Bunsen burners and conducted chemical reactions.

There’s a big difference between reading about a reaction and watching it happen right in front of you. This first lab experience sets the stage for a year of investigating, experimenting, and discovering in one of PHS’s incredible learning spaces.

Sometimes the best way to show you understand something is to teach it to someone else.

Students in PLTW Human Body Systems (HBS) at Plainfield High School created origami models to represent the process of muscle contraction and then put their understanding to the test by recording educational videos using their models.

The project challenges students to take a complex biological process and explain it clearly to an audience, combining their knowledge of anatomy with communication and presentation skills.

A summer abroad became a classroom connection at PHS!

On Friday, second- and third-year German students heard from fellow Quakers who spent part of their summer studying abroad in Germany. Students shared their experiences and offered a firsthand look at the language, culture, and everyday life they encountered while overseas.

There’s something powerful about hearing from peers who have taken what they learned at Plainfield High School and used it thousands of miles from home. What a great way to show where studying a world language can lead!

Precision matters in biomedical science!

Students in PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) at Plainfield High School are building their laboratory skills with a “Pipette by Numbers” activity. Students practiced accurately measuring and transferring small amounts of liquid while using their pipettes to create a finished design.

It’s a creative way for our Quakers to develop the accuracy, patience, and attention to detail they’ll need for more advanced lab investigations throughout the year.

What better way to learn about speed than to get moving?

Students in Physics 1 Honors at Plainfield High School took their learning into the hallways as they explored the difference between average and instantaneous speed. Skipping, jogging backward, and shuffling gave students real movement to measure, calculate, and analyze.

A little physics, a little cardio, and a memorable way for our Quakers to put classroom concepts in motion!

🦷 A future built around helping others smile!

Meet Reagan, a Plainfield High School student in Area 31’s Dental Assisting program and first Student Spotlight for 2026-2027! Reagan has wanted to become an orthodontist since eighth grade, and she sees Mrs. Holmes’ class as an exciting first step toward that goal.

Through collaboration, simulated work-based learning experiences, and connections with new classmates, Reagan is building her knowledge while exploring a career centered on helping others.

Outside Area 31, she stays busy as cheer team captain, a National Honor Society and DECA member, and a member of her student government’s executive board. On top of her busy schedule, she works part-time at a clothing boutique!

Her advice for future Dental Assisting students: "Build a strong foundation in science and math, especially chemistry, biology, and anatomy."

A little friendly competition can make learning even better!

PHS Newcomer language learners raced against one another to build the most correct sentences while putting several important English language skills into practice. Students worked on capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and pronoun use as they competed.

The challenge brought plenty of energy to the classroom while giving students repeated opportunities to communicate, learn from one another, and build confidence with English.

Every day counts—and so does every sentence!

How high can you build with spaghetti and one marshmallow?

Students in Technical Theatre at Plainfield High School started the year with the classic Spaghetti Marshmallow Tower Challenge. Working in groups, students had to design and build the tallest freestanding spaghetti tower—with one important requirement: the marshmallow had to sit at the very top.

There was plenty of trial, error, rebuilding, and adjusting along the way. More importantly, students were practicing skills they’ll rely on throughout Technical Theatre: teamwork, problem solving, and creative thinking.

Sometimes the best sound effects don’t come from a soundboard.

Students in Advanced Theatre Arts at Plainfield High School studied the world of radio dramas and stepped into the role of Foley artists, using everyday items they found around the classroom to create sound effects for a story.

It was a creative challenge that asked students to think differently about how sound helps an audience imagine a scene—even when there is nothing to see.

Another great example of creativity and collaboration at work at PHS!
