Southeast Idaho Council of Governments - SICOG

Southeast Idaho Council of Governments - SICOG SICOG’s Community and Economic Development team handles planning, funding, coordination and administration of the public works projects. Our focus is to offer cost-effective solutions to area-wide problems; provide a forum for locale policy development; assist in community planning, program management and business assistance; and to serve as a coordinating link between the city, county, state, federal, and other area-wide agencies to help make sure the community is adequately represented and protected.

In 2018, Southeast Idaho Council of Governments made a multi-phased plan to improve the facade of this notable building. This plan included replacing windows, awnings, restoration of the original flag mounts, and cleaning the terra-cotta. It's been quite a ride, but with the help of grant awards from Idaho Heritage Trust, IFFT Foundation, the City of Pocatello's Facade Improvement Program and donations from our communities we were able to restore the ornate features of this historical building!

We are so lucky to have had Sunshine Shepherd as our intern. Checkout this highlight from ISU:

Our second MPA alumni interview is with Sunshine Shepard (MPA, 2020). Our alumni our our best recruiters to the MPA program!.

Sunshine Shepard

1. Why did you decide to pursue the MPA at ISU?

Sunshine: I decided to pursue the MPA at ISU because I felt that the program offered many classes that would benefit my future career working with the public and in the non-profit sector.

2. What year did you graduate with your MPA?

Sunshine: I graduated in May of 2020.

3. What were your experiences in the MPA program and what memories do you have?

Sunshine: I had many positive experiences during my time in the MPA program including the various projects, my CPI internship with SICOG and the amazing people I was able to meet.

4. If you could give advice to a new or incoming MPA
student what would it be?

Sunshine: Take in all of the stories/experiences from
your classmates, be a reliable group partner and don't ever believe
Ryu if he says he will let the class out early.... haha!

5. What are you doing now in your career and how did the MPA benefit your career?

Sunshine: Currently I am the Director of the American Indian Services Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (AIS PREP) which is a
non-profit organization. I love my position, I oversee six middle
school STEM sites on six different reservations, we serve
approximately 400 students each summer. Each site is linked to the
local University in that area and serves their local tribal youth. We
have one site here at Idaho State University serving the
Shoshone-Bannock Youth, and the other sites are located in SD, NM, UT and two in AZ. I can honestly say that each course that I was able to take during the MPA program has had some sort of influence on my decisions, planning and organization of this program. I am forever thankful for the skills that I obtained in the MPA program. I still find myself pulling out the textbooks for reference every now and then!
