Life can change in an instant…

November 8, 2025

While participating in a voluntary off duty pickleball tournament, our members witnessed a gentleman going unconscious, stop breathing, and ultimately losing his pulse. Through early recognition, quick decision making, and relentless training, life saving measures were administered immediately.

It is a one in a million miracle that the crew’s efforts resulted in a victim going from completely lifeless to completely neurologically intact. Through fate the entire crew received a surprise visit from the man they brought back from the other side.

Before he left Ernie challenged the crew to a match once he is fully recovered, and we can’t wait. 🔱

Meet FF/Paramedic Ryan Burke,

Hello, I’m Ryan. I began my firefighting career with the City of Ocala in May 2017, where I proudly served for six years. After that time, my family and I returned to Volusia County where I grew up and I joined Deltona Fire Rescue for one year. In July 2024, I committed to the Ponce Inlet Fire Department, where I have now served for approximately a year and a half. Altogether, I bring over eight and a half years of firefighting experience, including earning my paramedic certification.

Interestingly, my journey with Ponce Inlet Fire Department began long before my career officially started. I volunteered with this very department back in 2013. It’s amazing how life can come full circle.

Like many in this profession, I became a firefighter because I want to help people. I’ve always had a strong desire to serve others, and every day I come to work knowing I have the skills and training to make a difference when people need it most.

Outside of work, I enjoy creating and building though my wife might say I enjoy making messes thanks to the number of hobbies I have. I love cooking, woodworking, 3D printing, pickleball, and home renovation projects. When it comes to cooking, nothing beats a perfectly cooked, medium-rare, classic American cheeseburger.

At work, my favorite tools are the hydraulic spreaders used for vehicle extrications, along with the Quint/Fire Engine itself an essential piece of equipment that allows us to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.

Great collaboration with the town 🇺🇸

🚒 Our firefighters were happy to lend a hand by using the ladder truck to help install a brand-new flag at Fisherman’s Harbor Village in front of 7-Eleven. It’s always great when our team can step in to support the community in ways that go beyond emergency response.

A big thank you to B-Shift and Town resident Brian Kopec! 👏🤝

Congrats to our very own Union member, Jeff Lord, for being named Employee of the Year!
