True or False? Water is always the first and best tool to put out a wildland fire.

❌ False. Water is not always readily available in the middle of the forest, plus it's not always affective for significantly large wildfires. Wildland firefighters work to contain and slow the blaze instead, using a variety of techniques to starve the fire:

✅Tactical Burning: Fighting fire with fire. Firefighters intentionally set controlled burns to reduce fuel sources like dry brush and vegetation.

✅Cutting Fire Lines: Using tools and heavy equipment to dig down to the bare-mineral soil. This tactic physically removes anything that can burn to stop the fire from spreading.

✅Using Dirt or Soil: Clean dirt can be directly applied to hot spots or flames to smother the fire.
