Native Wildflower Spotlight: Mexican Hat 🌼

You may have spotted this unique wildflower growing throughout New Mexico! Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera) gets its name from its distinctive bloom, with a tall central cone surrounded by drooping petals that resemble the brim of a traditional Mexican sombrero.

Native to New Mexico, this hardy wildflower is perfectly suited for our landscape. It thrives in full sun, tolerates drought, and can often be found growing in open, dry areas.

Mexican hat is also an important part of the ecosystem. Its blooms attract bees and butterflies, while its seed heads can provide food for birds later in the season. 🐝🦋

Next time you spot one, take a closer look at that unmistakable “hat” shape!

TRAFFIC ADVISORY:

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE: Warrior Drive

❎Warrior Drive is CLOSED at Gavilan Canyon Road for hazard mitigation and roadway construction. A Mountain Construction, in coordination with Lincoln County, New Mexico, will be repairing roadways, drainage systems, and improving utilities along Gavilan Canyon Road and Warrior Drive.

⚠️Please use caution, obey all posted signs and barricades.
🏍️Motorists should use Hull Road as an alternate route.
Gavilan Canyon Road remains open to through traffic.

The work began Tuesday, August 18, 2026 and is anticipated to continue through December 2026 as weather conditions permit.
