Help Inform Future Recovery Efforts!

Researchers from Utah State University and the University of Idaho are conducting a study on wildfire and post-fire flooding impacts following the 2024 South Fork and Salt Fires. They will be in the Ruidoso area this June to speak with residents and professionals about their experiences with response, recovery, and subsequent flooding events.

If you are interested in sharing your experiences with wildfire recovery and post-fire flooding, contact:
Maximo Lawlor: (623) 640-1598
Cat Edgeley: (928) 814-9834
Travis Paveglio: (509) 595-1607

Researchers are seeking a wide range of perspectives from the Ruidoso and Lincoln County! The study aims to better understand local experiences and perspectives, which may help inform future recovery, planning, and resource management efforts for other communities who experience something similar.

Please note: This is an independent research project. The study is not affiliated with or sponsored by the Village.

Tuesday, June 2, 2026

Flood Watch issued June 2 at 1:01PM MDT until June 3 at 10:00PM MDT by US National Weather Service Albuquerque New Mexico

WHAT
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

WHERE
A portion of central New Mexico, including the following area, south central mountains.

IMPACTS
Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris.
Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
TUESDAY: Rich Gulf moisture will surge over the area Tuesday producing numerous showers and thunderstorms. A few of the stronger storms will be capable of producing rain at rates over 1 inch per hour. Locations below recent burn scars will be especially susceptible to rapid runoff and flash flooding.

WEDNESDAY: Remnant abundant moisture will allow for another round of slow moving thunderstorms capable of producing 1 inch or more per hour to develop over or near the Ruidoso area and Seven Cabins burn scars early Wednesday afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall will threaten flash flooding on these recent burn scars. Secondary rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to last into the late evening hours.
