The first day of school brought excitement, smiling faces, and a renewed sense of possibility as students and staff returned to campuses across the Folsom Cordova Unified School District on Thursday, August 6, to begin the 2026-27 school year.

The first day of school is Thursday, August 6, and we can't wait to welcome our students, staff, and families back for the 2026โ€“27 school year! Before a new year of learning begins, let's take a look at how some FCUSD students stayed engaged, curious, and learning all summer through the District's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program.

From hands-on STEAM activities to engaging academic lessons, many students across the District spent their summer learning, creating, and exploring through FCUSDโ€™s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program.

Hosted at nine school sites, ELO-P provided students with meaningful opportunities to strengthen academic skills while participating in engaging, hands-on enrichment experiences designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.

FCUSD certificated teachers led targeted academic instruction that helped students continue building essential reading and math skills throughout the summer. Beyond the classroom, staff and community partners brought learning to life through a variety of recreational and enrichment activities that encouraged students to explore new interests and collaborate with their peers.

Students also participated in hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics experiences that challenged them to think critically, solve problems, and discover new ways to learn through exploration and creativity.

To help ensure every student had the opportunity to participate, the District provided meals and transportation throughout the summer program, removing barriers and creating equitable access for students and families.

By combining high-quality academics with engaging enrichment opportunities, FCUSD's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program helped students continue learning, growing, and making lasting memories all summer long.

The first day of school is this Thursday, August 6, and we are excited to welcome our students, staff, and families back for the 2026โ€“27 school year! As our campuses prepare to open their doors, let's take a look back at one of the incredible learning experiences that kept FCUSD students engaged, inspired, and preparing for their futures all summer long.

This summer, more than 150 FCUSD students participated in four weeks of real-world learning through internships with 22 local business partners, gaining valuable hands-on experience while exploring future career pathways.

Students celebrated their summer accomplishments at FCUSD's Career Technical Education (CTE) Summer Showcase on June 30 at Vista del Lago High School. The event gave students an opportunity to share what they learned and experienced during their summer internships.

Through the Career Technical Education Summer Preceptorship Program (CTESPP), high school students stepped beyond the classroom and into the workplace through internship opportunities with local businesses and industry leaders. Students explored potential career paths, applied their classroom learning in real-world settings, and built valuable skills while learning alongside professionals in their fields.

A special thank you to our industry partners for opening their doors and workplaces to provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Community partnerships like these play a vital role in preparing students for the workforce by helping them build professional skills, explore career pathways, and connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities. The red carpet was rolled out for the newest members of the Folsom Cordova USD as educators gathered for New Teacher Orientation at Vista del Lago High School on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

The 4th annual orientation welcomed dozens of new teachers from schools across the District and marked the beginning of their journey in FCUSD. Throughout the day, educators had the opportunity to connect with District leaders, learn about available resources, and build relationships with colleagues before the start of the 2026-27 school year.

FCUSD Superintendent Erik Swanson officially welcomed FCUSDโ€™s newest teachers, encouraging them to embrace the District's Collective Commitments as they begin their first year in FCUSD. He shared how caring for people, coaching and being coachable, adapting, adopting and abandoning practices when needed, remaining curious, and being accountable are foundational to creating positive learning environments where both students and staff can thrive.

Following the welcome, teachers participated in a series of interactive 20-minute District Office workshops that introduced them to the departments and services available to support them throughout the school year. The sessions provided opportunities to ask questions, build connections, and learn about the resources available to help them succeed in the classroom.

The orientation also provided valuable time for collaboration and conversation among new teachers as they shared experiences, built professional networks, and prepared for the first day of school.

As the 2026-27 school year approaches, FCUSD is excited to welcome its newest educators and looks forward to the passion, talent, and dedication they will bring to classrooms across FCUSD.

The warm welcome kicked off the administrators meeting, where new and returning site leaders received guidance, resources, and support to help prepare their teams and schools for a successful start to the new school year.

With a summer camp theme setting the stage, FCUSD leaders gathered for the Leadership Charge Session on Tuesday, July 22, at Cordova High School to connect, collaborate and focus on the work that will move our schools and District forward as we prepare for the 2026โ€“27 school year.

Throughout the day, leaders participated in interactive activities and meaningful conversations while exploring how clear vision, high expectations, caring relationships and data-informed strategies support continuous improvement and strengthen student outcomes. The session also provided an opportunity to welcome our newest site leaders to as they joined colleagues in preparing for the year ahead.

Another key focus was strengthening connections across the District. Leaders reflected on the importance of building relationships with employees, celebrating successes, understanding team needs and ensuring every school has the support and resources needed to succeed.

As FCUSD prepares for a new school year, the Leadership Charge Session united leaders around a shared purpose: strengthening relationships, driving continuous improvement and creating the conditions for every student and employee to thrive.

The wild side of summer took center stage as FCUSD students roared into the spotlight with special performances of Madagascar - A Musical Adventure KIDS, on Wednesday, June 17 at Gold Ridge Elementary School and Rancho Cordova Elementary School.

The productions served as the grand finale of VAPA Camp, a unique two-week summer arts experience program designed to support students as they transition from elementary to middle school while exploring the visual and performing arts in a fun, collaborative environment.

VAPA Camp served nearly 200 currently enrolled FCUSD students who completed fourth or fifth grade in May, giving them an opportunity to explore dance, drama, music and visual art while building friendships and discovering their talents in the arts.

New this year, VAPA Camp introduced a Theater Tech strand, giving students interested in working behind the scenes opportunities to explore set construction, costuming, sound, lighting and special effects. Students from the Folsom High School Drama Department also volunteered their time and talents, serving as mentors and role models for younger students.

Each year, VAPA Camp selects and purchases a new musical from Music Theatre International (MTI), often featuring a Disney production. This year, students brought Madagascar โ€“ A Musical Adventure KIDS to the stage in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the original film. The annual productions have also contributed to a growing lending library of materials available to FCUSD schools, supporting dozens of drama clubs and student productions across the district over the years.

Congratulations to all of the student performers, Theater Tech students, high school volunteers, staff and families who helped make this year's VAPA Camp a memorable success.

Two Vista del Lago High School students earned national recognition after placing third in the documentary category at the prestigious National History Dayยฎ National Contest, held June 14-18, 2026, at the University of Maryland, College Park. Nearly 3,000 middle and high school students from across the country and around the world gathered to showcase projects developed through National History Dayยฎ, a rigorous, year-long academic program focused on historical research and presentation.

Rising seniors Hansika Kolli and Soina Kaur brought home bronze medals and a cash award for their exceptional historical research, storytelling and documentary filmmaking. The pair also received certificates of recognition from U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla and were named Next Generation Angels Awards winners, sponsored by The Better Angels Society. As award winners, the students will receive a personal mentoring session with a professional documentarian and are invited to attend an awards gala in New York City later this year.

Congratulations to Hansika and Soina on this outstanding achievement. Their national success is a testament to their hard work and the support of the educators, mentors and family members who helped them along the way.
