Over the course of our Summer Matters program, Youth Development employed over 80+ high school students who participated in the Summer Ambassadors program. Our Summer Ambassadors were tasked with supporting the day to day operations of our Expanded Learning Summer Matters sites as part of a work force development program. The program included our Summer Matters Media Project: LIT Summer. Ambassadors were trained in literacy facilitation, researched the importance of literacy, and were provided time to create a 4 week work plans that detailed book selection, read aloud and enrichment facilitation. "Two solar-powered, micro-mobility charging stations are now in place on the campus of Hiram Johnson High School that will allow students to charge e-bikes and scooters during the school day. The new stations are the result of a partnership between SCUSD, SMUD and CALSTART."

A new way for students to charge their e-bikes and scooters during the school day was unveiled at Hiram Johnson High School on Wednesday.

This morning, Hiram Johnson High School cut the ribbon on their new Solar Powered E-Bike & E-Scooter Charging Station made possible through funding from CalStart and SMUD Shine grant.

These chargers were identified by Community Schools as a needed resource by students who were charging their batteries in various unsecured locations across the campus. To use, students have to demonstrate that they are using a helmet and bring a locking device. Each station includes a pump and repair tools for traditional pedal bicycles as well.

The City of Sacramento's Urban Bicycling and Scooting 101 Class is a great introduction or refresher for people who bicycle and scoot on-street in Sacramento. This class also meets the requirements for the Sidewalk Bicycling Diversion Program. Next free class is August 18

Date / Time : Tuesday, August 18 at 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: Colonial Heights Library, 4799 Stockton Blvd

About the class (it's free!): This is great way for folks who may be new to biking/scooting - or veteran riders just looking for a refresher course - to learn about the rules of the road. No bicycle/scooter is required, and everyone who attends will receive some City of Sacramento bicycle swag. This class also meets the requirements for the Sidewalk Bicycling Diversion Program.

Our Parent Education Preschool Program starts August 11, 2026

This is a fee based program run by the SCUSD Adult Education Department. Parents work in the classroom in collaboration and guidance of the teacher to help children develop a variety of skills. Parents also learn parenting techniques to use in the classroom and at home.
