Education is one of the most effective tools for strengthening compliance.

The FPPC's Political Reform Education Program (PREP) provides first-time or low-risk violators with an opportunity to learn California's campaign finance and ethics laws, and avoid formal enforcement penalties when appropriate.

Recently, a local candidate successfully completed PREP after correcting a campaign advertising disclosure issue, allowing the matter to be resolved without further enforcement.

Whether you're a candidate, campaign treasurer, or public official, understanding the rules before problems arise is the best way to build public trust.

The 24-hour campaign reporting period is now underway.

Beginning August 5 through Election Day (November 3), candidates and committees may be required to file a Form 497 within 24 hours after certain contributions or independent expenditures are made.

State filers must submit Form 497 electronically.

In coordination with the California Department of Technology, the Fair Political Practices Commission will conduct scheduled network maintenance beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 6. During the approximately two-hour maintenance window, some FPPC online services may be intermittently unavailable. This planned maintenance is part of the FPPC's ongoing efforts to improve the reliability, performance, and availability of the services it provides to the public.

For candidates appearing on the November 3, 2026, General Election ballot, the deadline to file a Declaration of Candidacy and Candidate Form 700 (Statement of Economic Interests) is Friday, August 7, 2026.

The Fair Political Practices Commission is proud to have worked with Assemblymember Avelino Valencia and Governor Gavin Newsom on the enactment of AB 2421.

AB 2421 increases government efficiency and improves the accuracy and integrity of the state's campaign finance disclosure system by creating a process for the Secretary of State to terminate committees that have gone dormant. Roughly 10,000 committees are inactive and have outdated contact information. Eliminating them gives Californians an accurate understanding of who is participating in California politics and returns Fair Political Practices Commission staff time to compliance issues, investigations, and enforcement.

The measure takes effect January 1, 2027.
