The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) tracks these incidents closely. The data provides a clear picture of the risks associated with consumer fireworks:
• Age Distribution: The 15 to 24 age group accounts for the largest share of reported injuries, with children under 15 making up over 30% of cases.
• Dangerous Devices: While often viewed as harmless for children, sparklers exceed 1,000°F and account for approximately 1,300 to 1,400 emergency room visits annually.
• Bystander Risk: About 65% of fireworks injury victims are bystanders, highlighting that even those not lighting devices are at risk.
• Device Malfunctions: About 29% of injuries are severe, including third-degree burns, amputations, and blindness caused by device misfires, tip-overs, or illegal explosives.
