Gaga Ball Showdown & Team STEM House Leaderboard Update!

What an incredible week at the STEM Academy! Our Team STEM houses brought the heat, heart, and high-fives to the pit for this week’s Gaga Ball competition! Watching our 6th–8th graders collaborate, compete, and show off that true house pride was amazing.

A HUGE congratulations to our Top 3 Houses this week:
🥇 1st Place: Epic Donuts (878 pts)
🥈 2nd Place: Capybaras (877 pts)
🥉 3rd Place: Massive Penguins (748 pts)

Shoutout to Capybaras for bringing serious energy to the live game, and Epic Donuts for barely holding onto that #1 spot! 🍩🦫🐧

🏆 How Do Team STEM House Points Work?
House points aren't just won in the Gaga pit! Our house cup system recognizes the whole scholar. Students earn points for:
Academic Achievement & Effort: Excelling in core classes, staying organized, and pushing toward academic goals.
Positive Behavior & Core Values: Living out our core values—Integrity, Respect, Compassion, Perseverance, Accountability, Community, and Leadership.
Involvement: Showing up, stepping up, and participating in campus activities and live games!

➕➖ Teacher Adjustments: Teachers also have the power to add bonus points for students caught demonstrating outstanding character or deduct points when expectations aren't met.

Every point counts, and the leaderboard can shift at any moment! Keep up the hard work, show that house pride, and let’s see who takes the top spot next month! 💥

🏛️ Who makes a great leader, and how does government impact our daily lives? 🗳️
Our 6th graders just answered those big questions at our Government PBL Showcase!

To explore what it takes to lead and govern, our students stepped into the world of politics—crafting persuasive campaign speeches, designing custom posters, and running a live class election. ⚡

Introducing Mr. Kole Lovett!!!

Mr. Lovett is STEM’s amazing Computer Science teacher. Despite this being only his second year at STEM, he has already made a huge impact on the STEM community with his approachable demeanor and witty humor. If you walk past his room during passing period, you’ll find him standing at his door, ready to make your day better with silliness and jokes.

Mr. Lovett teaches all four years of Computer Science, from Principles through CS III. Along the way, he prepares his students to earn two industry-based certifications—one in Java and another in Python—as well as preparing them for the AP exam. That means four different classes, multiple programming languages, certifications, and an AP course...which seems like a lot of tabs to have open at once.

Despite the workload, Mr. Lovett approaches every day with a supportive attitude and inspires all of his “Cheese-balls” to excel in their coding education. In just two years, he has created a classroom where students know they can stop by, laugh, ask for help, and—occasionally—even talk about computer science.

We tried to come up with a good coding joke to finish this, but there was a problem with our Java.

We just couldn't C # what it was.
(No, I do not get that joke.)

Introducing Mr. Gilbert!
Mr. Gilbert is a teacher that you don't forget about once you leave his classroom, not only because of the passion that he instills into his teaching, but because he just keeps moving up in grades. Through classes spent purely on telling stories, or hours that he spends outside of class providing the time and space for his students to work, it is so evident how much Mr. Gilbert cares. From teaching 7th grade Texas History, to AP Human Geography, AP/Dual Credit US government, and AP Macroeconomics this year, Mr. Gilbert has created projects that allow students to think past the subject and understand the real application of his lessons to the real world. The lessons that Mr. Gilbert wants his students to remember cover more than the questions found on the AP test, but also how to use power tools without chopping your fingers off.

Mr. Gilbert is such an incredible teacher who puts so much effort into teaching, ensuring that all students feel confident in their studies. He might not have the traditional history classroom, but the lessons that he teaches will never be forgotten

More to come, but our high school Team STEM mixed-grade level advisories were busy taking pictures today.

The amazing STEM Ambassadors who also serve as Advisory Leaders took one of Ms. Wells’ Instagram reel ideas and made it a reality!

Enjoy this teaser video while we get the bigger one made!

Introducing Mrs. Longoria!!!

Mrs. Longoria is one of those teachers everyone loves because she makes learning memorable. She has been at STEM for five years and teaches AP World History to sophomores and Dual Credit Learning Frameworks to freshmen.

Known for her enthusiasm, engaging lessons, and love for Taylor Swift, Mrs. Longoria is a teacher many students make meaningful connections with. There is A LOT to cover in AP World, but she finds ways to make it fun with projects and hands-on learning experiences that help students better understand the content. In doing so, she creates a classroom where students feel supported, and she brings genuine care and good vibes to her teaching every day.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Longoria sponsors our STEM Ambassadors, where we foster leadership in our students. Her impact goes beyond the classes and organizations she sponsors. Students and faculty alike have come to depend on the joy and energy she brings to STEM—and things just wouldn't feel quite the same without her.

We are so thankful to have Mrs. Longoria as part of the STEM Team.

And since she loves Taylor Swift, we had to squeeze in at least one terrible Swiftie pun:
Mrs. Longoria never goes out of Style—but if you get on her bad side, just Shake It Off and hope there’s no Bad Blood.
