🍲 Calling all chowder lovers — the Fisherman’s Wharf Chowder Fest is back this Saturday!

Local restaurants go head-to-head for the title of San Francisco’s Best Clam Chowder, and YOU get to help crown the People’s Choice winner. It’s a full afternoon on the Wharf: live music, a marketplace, outdoor bars, photo ops, lawn games, and that cozy, briny bowl of comfort we all love.

Here’s how it works: it’s free to walk in and enjoy the music, marketplace, and activities — and if you want to taste and vote, you grab a tasting pass. Just know the passes are limited and expected to sell out, so snag one ahead if you’re coming hungry!

📅 Saturday, October 24 · 🕛 12–5 PM (tastings 12–3:30, winners announced 4:45)
📍 Little Embarcadero & Triangle Lot, Fisherman’s Wharf (2860 Taylor St)
🎟️ Free to enter · Tasting passes required to sample & vote (Hungry $50, Thirsty 21+ $70, VIP Judge’s Table $125)

During construction of California's GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, 19 WORKERS fell toward the ocean—and survived because of an extraordinary invention!

In 1936, building the Golden Gate Bridge was among America's most dangerous construction jobs. Workers balanced hundreds of feet above San Francisco Bay,

battling powerful winds, slippery steel beams, and heavy coastal fog. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss introduced an enormous $130,000 safety net suspended beneath the unfinished roadway.

The net saved 19 workers who fell from the bridge! The grateful survivors gave themselves an unforgettable nickname: the Halfway-to-Hell Club. The massive rope net extended beyond the bridge's working platforms and became one of the most innovative construction safety measures of its time.

Tragically, 11 men still lost their lives during construction, including 10 when heavy scaffolding tore through the net in February 1937. But the lives saved by this extraordinary system helped demonstrate how engineering innovations could protect workers on dangerous construction projects.
