Dear volunteers,
We made a meaningful impact during Little Saigon Clean Up Day. Together, residents, community leaders and dedicated volunteers worked side by side to keep our neighborhood clean and vibrant. Our young volunteers also had the opportunity to witness firsthand how homelessness affects our residents, businesses, and the broader community.
Thank you all for volunteered your time and energy and Special thanks to Story Road Business Association, The Mayor office, The Trash PunX, Phase 2 Industries, Office, District 7 Neighborhood Association Leadership, and BeautifySJ. We are also grateful to Vu Ding Banh Mi Oven for the awesome sandwiches.

Like so many in our community, I am heartbroken over what has happened. This monument means so much to our Vietnamese community, and seeing it targeted in this way is deeply painful.

I ask everyone to come together and help, not hurt, this investigation. There have been a lot of rumors circulating, including claims that this was an inside job, that cranes or heavy machinery were used, or that there were no cameras in the area. None of those claims are true. Speculation only creates more confusion, causes unnecessary division, and takes attention away from finding the people who committed this crime.

If you recognize the suspects or have any information, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward and contact SJPD. Let's put our differences aside, stand together, bring those responsible to justice, and restore our Vietnamese Heritage Garden.

I am also working to start a fund to help restore the Garden. I will be sharing details soon on how our community can support this effort and make donations. Together, we will rebuild what was damaged and show that our community is stronger than those who tried to divide us.

As a refugee and immigrant, I will always be grateful to America for opening her arms to my family when we escaped communism in search of freedom. This country gave us the opportunity to rebuild our lives, pursue our dreams, and become part of a community we are proud to call home.

It was a true honor to participate in the Rose, White & Blue Parade as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Today, I celebrate not only our nation’s birth, but also the enduring promise of freedom, hope, and opportunity that has touched the lives of so many families like mine.

Happy Independence Day, America. God bless the United States of America.

This past weekend, the “Thank You America” monument at the Vietnamese Heritage Garden was vandalized, damaged, and stolen. This monument represents the sacrifices, resilience, and gratitude of generations of Vietnamese refugees who rebuilt their lives in San José and helped strengthen our community.
For the Vietnamese community in San José, this monument carries deep meaning.

Many of us came to this city as refugees after the fall of Saigon. We came here after losing our country, leaving behind homes, loved ones, careers, and entire lives. We came here seeking freedom, safety, opportunity, and dignity. San José gave us a chance to rebuild. America gave us a chance to live free.

We are grateful to the San José Police Department for their swift efforts in locating and recovering the stolen statue. While the monument has been recovered, this incident has deeply affected many residents who view it as a lasting symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and freedom.

We remain committed to working with City leadership, Parks staff, law enforcement, and community partners to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident, restore the monument, and strengthen protections at the Vietnamese Heritage Garden. The community deserves accountability, transparency, and a clear path forward. We will continue to preserve this important landmark and ensure that its history, significance, and message of gratitude endure for future generations.
