Tick Alert: Stay safe outdoors this summer.
Ticks can live in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas. A tick bite can sometimes spread Lyme disease or other illnesses, so it is important to take a few simple precautions before and after time outside.
When walking, hiking, or spending time on trails, stay on marked paths and avoid tall grass or heavy brush when possible. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent, and wear light-colored long sleeves and pants so ticks are easier to spot.
After being outdoors, check your clothing and body for ticks. Pay close attention to areas behind the knees, around the waistband, under arms, and on the scalp. Shower soon after coming indoors.
If you find a tick, remove it carefully with fine-tip tweezers. Do not burn it, smother it, or try to remove it with your fingers.
Call your health care provider if you develop a fever or rash, or if you cannot remove the whole tick. Seek emergency care right away for serious symptoms such as weakness, numbness, or trouble breathing.
