Our Animal Services Officers do much more than care for animals inside the shelter. Every day, our Field Unit works throughout San José and our contracting cities, responding to animal-related public safety concerns and partnering with other agencies to help protect people and pets.
Earlier this week, our Field Unit requested assistance from the San José Police Department while investigating a confirmed report involving four dogs seen roaming together near Minor Avenue that later attacked and killed a cat.
Because the dogs were believed to potentially be connected to a nearby encampment, our Field Unit and SJPD coordinated a response. Our officers located six dogs at the encampment who appeared similar to those described in the report. After further assessment, our officers determined these were not the dogs involved in the attack.
During the response, SJPD independently took the dogs’ caretakers into custody for matters unrelated to our shelter’s investigation. With no caretaker remaining, ACS officers safely captured four of the dogs and transported them to the shelter for care.

Our Field Unit continues to respond when animals need us, but our shelter is already well over capacity for dogs. We need our community’s help creating space for the animals still coming through our doors.
