Preparing for disasters doesn’t happen overnight — it happens right now and every day.

The American Red Cross is continuously training disaster volunteers, preparing emergency supplies, coordinating with local partners, and ensuring shelters are ready to open and operate when emergencies occur. This ongoing work helps communities across the Los Angeles Region receive support as quickly and safely as possible.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to support your community, join us. Whether as a volunteer, donor, or supporter, your involvement helps ensure help is ready when it’s needed most.

Ever been unsure whether a dog in public is a service animal or an emotional support animal? It is easy to confuse the two, but the difference is more than just a label.

Service dogs are specially trained to perform specific tasks to mitigate a person’s disability and are protected under federal law. Emotional support animals provide comfort through companionship at home, but do not have public access rights.

For veterans and retired first responders living with post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury, that distinction can be life-changing. Through our Pups4Patriots™ program, American Humane Society provides specially trained service dogs at no cost, helping restore confidence, reduce anxiety and support reintegration into daily life.

Understanding the difference protects disability rights and honors the vital role these highly trained dogs play.
