🚨 BUSY MORNING FOR SCIPIO-GENEVA FIRE RESCUE 🚨
This morning, the dedicated men and women of Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue began their day early, responding to several emergency calls throughout our community. Within just a few hours, our volunteer firefighters responded to multiple medical emergencies, two motor vehicle accidents, and a significant fuel leak.
The morning began with our members responding to three separate medical calls, providing patient care and assistance as needed. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported two-vehicle motor vehicle accident with injuries on Highway 7 in front of Decatur Mold.
Fire personnel responded and, upon arrival, immediately began assessing the occupants involved while working alongside Jennings County EMS. Crews also evaluated the vehicles and surrounding area for any additional hazards that could pose a threat to the patients, emergency personnel, or passing motorists.
Thankfully, none of the individuals involved sustained serious injuries. Three patients were evaluated and ultimately signed off/refused transport (SOR).
Due to the location of the accident and the vehicles obstructing the roadway, Highway 7 was reduced to one lane. Firefighters and a deputy established traffic control and worked to maintain a safe flow of traffic through the area while protecting emergency personnel operating at the scene. Crews remained on location until Lee’s Wrecker Service was able to safely remove both vehicles and the roadway could be reopened.
However, the morning was far from over.
While Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue personnel were still committed to the accident on Highway 7, the department was dispatched to a second motor vehicle accident in the area of 300N and 900W. Initial information indicated that the accident involved property damage and a vehicle with a ruptured fuel tank actively leaking fuel onto the roadway.
With personnel already committed to the first incident, additional Scipio-Geneva firefighters responded to the station and placed Rescue-21 in service for the second call. As personnel became available from the Highway 7 accident, they also responded to assist at the second scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters identified the leaking fuel and immediately began working to contain and mitigate the hazard. Crews applied absorbent material to the affected portion of the roadway while addressing the damaged fuel tank to prevent additional fuel from entering the roadway.
Managing a fuel leak following an accident is an important part of protecting not only those involved in the incident, but also other motorists, emergency responders, and the surrounding environment. Crews continued mitigation efforts until the immediate hazard was controlled and the scene could be safely cleared.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the second accident.
Wrecker 31 and Lee’s Wrecker Service were requested to assist with removing the damaged vehicles. Scipio-Geneva firefighters remained on scene for a little over an hour before the hazards were mitigated, the vehicles were removed, and personnel were able to clear the scene and return to service.
This morning is another example of what it means to operate a volunteer fire department. Our members may be at home, getting ready for work, spending time with their families, or going about their normal daily responsibilities when the pager sounds. When that call comes in, they leave what they are doing and respond to help someone in need.
From three medical calls to two separate motor vehicle accidents, our firefighters continued answering the call and ensuring our community had emergency personnel available when they were needed.
