At 4:44am on September 28th The Echo Hose H&L Co.1 was requested to respond mutual aid to the City of Derby for a motor vehicle accident with extrication.

Upon arrival, crews found the Derby Fire Department members working on a tractor-trailer that had crashed into a stone wall, leaving the operator heavily entrapped within the cab. The crew of Squad 1 assisted with stabilization of the tractor-trailer.

Once the vehicle was stabilized, crews from Derby and Ansonia worked to successfully extricate the operator from the cab.

Shelton, Derby, and Ansonia operated under a Unified Command throughout the incident, coordinating stabilization, extrication, and overall scene operations.

On October 14th at 11am, there will be an unveiling of a new monument at Veterans Memorial Park. This memorial will recognize the B.F. Goodrich fire that occurred in March 1975.

Nature: House Fire

On the above date, time and location, Companies 3, 1 and 4 were dispatched to a reported house fire. Upon arrival of Assistant Chief Mattioli, he confirmed a working structure fire reporting heavy fire showing from 3 windows of a single story ranch. AC Mattioli assumed the role of Incident Command and began directing units and issuing assignments and added company 5 and Stratford FD. As crews made entry with the Operations Officer, Car 2, they were met with high heat and significant hoarding conditions. As members tried to clear a path to locate the fire, additional units began entering through windows in attempt to locate potential victims. Car 6 had a crew attempt ventilation via the roof as Car 1 assumed the role of Safety Officer. After several minutes, crews cleared a path enough to get to the seat of the fire and begin extinguishment. Several searches proved negative. Fortunately, a neighbor advised FD that the occupants were all accounted for in his house across the street. Approximately 35 members with Engines 32, 2, 42, 35, Squad 1 Ladders 51 and 47, Rescue 30, Cars 1, 2, 3 and 6 as well as Stratford Engine 4 and Car 5 operated for just over an hour. No injuries occurred and the home is not habitable. The Fire Marshals office is conducting an investigation on the cause of the fire. Echo Hose Ambulance provided standby support in the event of any injuries. The Nichols, Derby and Monroe Fire departments provided station coverage while the Shelton units worked the fire.

On this beautiful day, so similar to that Tuesday, September 11, 2001, members of the Shelton Fire Department honored the sacrifices made by so many first responders on that somber day. This morning, the White Hills Fire Company held a brief ceremony to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and remember all who perished at the hands of evil. Members attended a ceremony at the Mission Barbecue in Orange as well as a ceremony at the Derby Green also honoring those lost on 9/11. As the SFD had 6 members respond to the WTC on 9/11, we all remember and will not forget!

The Officers and members of the Shelton Fire Department remember the heroic actions of the members of the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, and EMS on this day and every day. Especially the 343 members who made the ultimate sacrifice 25 years ago and those who continue to suffer from 9/11 related illnesses. We also keep in mind the nearly 3000 civilians who lost their lives. Never Forget!

At approximately 9:03pm, (shortly after clearing RT 8 from an extrication) Companies 1 and 3 responded back to RT 8 for a vehicle fire. It was reported to be secondary from a motor vehicle accident with possibly one occupant trapped in the car. While in route, dispatch confirmed that everyone was out of the vehicle and it was well involved in fire. Car 6 (Asst. Chief Mike Plavcan) arrived and confirmed the initial report and took the role as Incident Commander. Upon arrival of Engine 2, crews stretched an attack hose and began fire suppression with Operations Officer Car 2 (Deputy Chief Wilson). The fire was under control in minutes with the assistance of Squad 1 and Engine 35. One occupant was transported by EHAC for evaluation.
