Here’s a white pill for everyone believing that the Republic is beyond saving!

"Today marks a historic victory for the NRA, the Second Amendment, and law-abiding Americans."

A federal appeals court struck down New Jersey's ban on AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles and magazines holding more than 10 rounds, ruling the law unconstitutional in a landmark Second Amendment decision.

Rinse and repeat.

Rinse and repeat.

“Rome fed 200,000 families free grain by 46 BC, and it called this generosity. Julius Caesar inherited a dole of 320,000 recipients and trimmed it, not out of principle but because the treasury was bleeding. This was the annona, the grain distribution that started as emergency relief under the Gracchi in 123 BC and hardened into a permanent entitlement. Once free grain became a right, no politician could touch it and keep his head.

You already know how this works, because you watch the same play run today. A subsidy arrives as mercy. It stays as an expectation. Then it becomes the thing men vote for instead of working for.

The Roman citizen once farmed his own land, served in his own legion, and expected nothing from the state but courts and roads. By the time Trajan was staging 123 days of games in AD 107, slaughtering 11,000 animals and pairing 10,000 gladiators for the crowd, that citizen had become a spectator. He no longer fought Rome's wars: hired auxiliaries and Germanic mercenaries did. He no longer fed himself: Egypt and North Africa did, shipped in on the public account. He no longer chose his rulers in any meaningful sense: he cheered them in the Colosseum and collected his ration.

The free grain and the free games purchased compliance, not compassion. A man dependent on the state for his dinner and his entertainment does not organize resistance to that state, and every emperor from Augustus onward understood the arithmetic. Panem et circenses was a bribe paid in exchange for civic surrender, and the mob accepted the terms gladly.

Here is the mechanism the welfare enthusiast never grasps. Virtue is not a feeling. It is a practice, and practices atrophy when the incentive to perform them disappears. Take away a man's need to provide, defend, and decide, and you domesticate him rather than liberate him. Rome spent four centuries proving it, then handed the ruins to Odoacer in AD 476 without much of a fight, because the men who might have fought had long since learned to wait for the grain ship instead.”

More than one third of U.S. adults believe violence is needed to get the country back on track, according to a new PBS News/NPR/Marist poll.

Thirty-seven percent of adults believe that Americans may have to resort to violence to get the country back on track. That includes 12% who say they strongly agree with that statement.

When Marist asked this question in October, 30% believed that violence may be necessary to course-correct the country.

Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said the finding reflects the view that "the normal functioning of our government is not moving things quickly, or even in a way that's beneficial to innovation."

This is a view held by some on the left and some on the right, he added. Thirty-three percent of Democrats, 40% of Republicans and 35% of independents say Americans may have to use violence to get the country back on track, the poll found.

Beverly Gage, a Yale University historian, said there's historical precedent for that fervor for violence. It's been there from the nation's beginning.

What makes the current moment distinct, Gage said, is the "seeming popularity or resignation to the idea that violence might become necessary."

Cheers! Can’t think of a better distillation of the issue facing the party.

The only way libertarianism will succeed is if it can transcend its biggest hurdle: the culture war. Liberty is for everyone not for only certain people.

To be a libertarian means you must support freedom for the conservative Christian, regardless of if they are Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox. But also for those who are not Christian like the Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans, and even the non-religious from Spiritual to Atheist. Freedom is also for the progressive, for those who are opposed to the conservatism. Liberty demands freedom for each individual, regardless of if you’re white or black, male or female, straight or gay, cisgender or trans, for you and your neighbors.

If we can’t understand that freedom doesn’t fit in our narrow boxes then we continue useless infighting with zero stakes instead of sharing the most wonderful concept of western civilization.

I may not agree with what you say, believe, or how you live, but I will defend to the death your right to speak, believe, and live the way you want to.
