What an amazing turnout for Reforest Spokane Day! Around 200 volunteers joined us to plant over 100 trees along the Children of the Sun Trail and it was wonderful to see so many new and familiar faces. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, Hillyard neighbors, and business partners who helped make this event possible. The trail will be shadier and more welcoming for decades because of you!

These native serviceberry and chokecherry trees are part of the CoolCanopy program that provides free trees to properties all across Spokane County. Learn more and sign up for a free tree at landscouncil.org/coolcanopy.

This curious beaver is checking out a floating pond leveler that The Lands Council installed on a property in Pullman. Devices like these are part of TLC’s beaver coexistence projects—they keep beaver dams and ponds intact while allowing enough water flow so that roads and buildings on properties don’t get flooded.

This landowner also appreciates that the pond adds subirrigation to his field, watering plants from below, and creates waterfowl habitat. We even installed a goose nesting box on top of the pond leveler!

Beavers are ecological engineers, building dams that slow down water, which creates greener spaces that serve as wildfire breaks and refuges for wildlife. Beaver coexistence means working with nature, rather than against it, and finding a solution that can benefit both people and wildlife.

Come chat with us about trees!

Join us one week from today for my first District 1 Town Hall! We’re going to be focusing on our District 1 parks, increasing our District 1 tree coverage, and everything else relating to the great District 1. It’s not just us, Council Member Cathcart and I will be joined by representatives from Spokane Parks & Recreation and The Lands Council to help answer your questions🌳🌲🌱

The first hour of the program will be community tabling with neighborhood councils and other city programs while the second hour will have a brief presentation followed by a question and answer portion. If you can’t join us at the NE community center next week don’t worry, city cable 5 will also be there and have a recording to review later!

Be on the lookout for a link to pre-submit questions in the coming days!
