A Wonderful Afternoon Exploring Springfield’s Pillsbury Legacy!

Nearly 60 guests filled the pews of The Abbey today for another successful Brown Bag Lunch hosted by Preservation, Inc.!

Our guest speaker, Curtis Mann, treated the audience to a fascinating presentation on the history of Pillsbury Mills and the role industry played in shaping Springfield’s past.

The afternoon was especially meaningful as former Pillsbury employees had an opportunity to reconnect, reminisce, and share memories. When asked how many in the audience knew someone who had worked at Pillsbury, nearly every hand went up — a wonderful reminder of just how deeply this iconic factory was woven into the lives of Springfield families.

A special thank you to Curtis Mann for sharing his knowledge and bringing this important chapter of Springfield history to life, and to everyone who joined us!

We look forward to continuing our three-part Brown Bag Lunch Series, Exploring a Springfield Legacy, as we celebrate the people, stories, and history of Pillsbury Mills.

Preservation, Inc. invites you to join us at The Abbey on the historic Ursuline campus for a special three-part Brown Bag Lunch Series, “Pillsbury Mills: Exploring a Springfield Legacy,” beginning next Tuesday, October 27, and continuing in December and January.

The speakers will explore the factory's rich history, its lasting impact on Springfield and the surrounding community, and the exciting efforts underway to preserve its history and treasures for future generations!

Our first presenter is Curtis Mann, noted Springfield historian and author, who will take guests on a journey through the history of Springfield's milling facility, along with the origins and growth of the Pillsbury Company. Learn about the people, operations, and history behind a landmark that helped shape our city's industrial past.

Nearly 100 guests filled the pews of the beautiful Abbey for Preservation, Inc.’s recent Brown Bag Lunch featuring Sister Kevin Ritterbusch and Sister Brendan Jacoby. We were fortunate to have the event recorded, and we will share the video as soon as it is ready!

Sister Kevin and Sister Brendan took us back through their childhoods, their school days at Ursuline, their decisions to enter religious life, and their many years of teaching and service. There were wonderful stories that made us laugh, thoughtful moments that reminded us just how much the world has changed, and heartfelt memories of the students, Sisters, families and friendships that shaped their lives.

Sitting in that magnificent chapel, surrounded by nearly every pew filled, made the afternoon even more special. It was one of those moments when the beauty of the building and the history being shared inside it seemed to come together perfectly.

We are so grateful to Sister Kevin and Sister Brendan for sharing their memories, humor, wisdom and remarkable history with us — and to everyone who came and made the afternoon such a success.

Tony and I are looking for someone to professionally video tape the Brown Bag lunch this Tuesday! Last minute cancellation has us scrambling- if anyone has a lead please let us know! We can pay a small stipend but not what most are asking for to record this.

We are looking for individuals that can build a ramp that would make our Abbey accessible to everyone. We have received a wonderful grant from a local business to help us make our historic venues available to those individuals who are not able to enter our buildings because of physical limitations. Help us make our friends with access limitations feel welcome. Please call us 217-836-7669
