Fire prevention is all month long in Lemay and in full swing!

The Lemay Fire Protection District would like to share the funeral arrangements for Retired Fire Captain Irvin J. “Cotton” Schaeffer Jr.

Captain Schaeffer faithfully served the Lemay community for 38 years, beginning his career in 1955 and retiring in 1993. Following his years of service as a firefighter and Captain, Cotton continued his commitment to the Lemay Fire Protection District by serving an additional six years as a member of the Board of Directors.

Visitation will be held Monday, September 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Kutis Funeral Home, South County Chapel, located at 5255 Lemay Ferry Road at Butler Hill Rd.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a procession to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, with arrival anticipated at approximately 11:30 a.m.

We continue to extend our deepest condolences to Cotton’s wife, family, friends, and the many members of the fire service who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

Please continue to keep the Schaeffer family in your thoughts and prayers as we honor a man who devoted decades of his life to the Lemay Fire Protection District and the community it serves.

It is with great sadness that the Lemay Fire Protection District announces the passing of Retired Fire Captain Irvin “Cotton” Schaeffer.

Captain Schaeffer began his career with the Lemay Fire District in 1955 and faithfully served our community for 38 years, retiring in 1993. During nearly four decades of service, Cotton was part of generations of firefighters who dedicated their lives to protecting the citizens of Lemay and helping build the fire district we know today.

We extend our deepest condolences to Cotton’s wife, his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him. Please keep the Schaeffer family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Captain Schaeffer’s many years of service, dedication, and commitment to the Lemay community will not be forgotten.

🇺🇸 WE WILL NEVER FORGET — SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

Today, the Lemay Fire Protection District joins our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the extraordinary courage and sacrifice shown on one of the darkest days in American history.

We remember those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and aboard American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

We remember the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who learned what was happening elsewhere and courageously fought back against the hijackers. Their actions prevented the aircraft from reaching its intended target and saved countless lives.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost, including 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority Police officers, along with the many other first responders, military personnel, and civilians who gave their lives or rushed toward danger to help others.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 carries a special meaning. We remember the firefighters who climbed the stairs while others were coming down. They knew the danger, yet continued upward because people needed them.

On this Patriot Day, we honor the fallen, their families, the survivors, our military members, first responders, and everyone whose life was forever changed that morning.

We also remember the unity, compassion, and resolve Americans showed in the days that followed. May we never lose sight of that spirit.

We remember New York.
We remember the Pentagon.
We remember Shanksville.
We remember them all.
