A Message of Appreciation to Our Community

Thursday night, our community experienced an unusual and challenging incident. While situations like this are never easy, they remind us of the importance of compassion, teamwork, and the dedicated people who step forward when help is needed.

We sincerely appreciate the Stevenson Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Highlands Medic, Jackson County Probate Judge Victor Manning, Mountain Lakes Mobile Crisis Team, and the family members who provided support for their professionalism, patience, compassion, and assistance.

Out of respect for everyone involved, we will never share personal details.

We also thank the public for their patience, understanding, and support during this unusual situation.

Above all, our thoughts are with everyone affected. We hope the days ahead bring healing, peace, and better circumstances for all involved.

Sometimes, the greatest gifts we can offer one another are patience, understanding, and kindness.

Thank you to everyone who answered the call and demonstrated what it truly means to care for others.

A sincere thank you is owed to the Jackson County Rescue Squad for their professionalism and technical rescue expertise during the successful cave rescue in Stevenson, Alabama. Jackson County is fortunate to have such a dedicated team, and many people may not realize just how valuable an asset they are to our community until moments like these.

Thank you to Jackson County 911 for the critical behind-the-scenes communication and coordination with dispatchers and firefighters throughout the incident.

We also appreciate the firefighters who stood by and supported this effort, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their support in less-than-ideal weather conditions, and the City of Stevenson for providing a hot meal to the crews working late into the night.

This rescue was a great example of teamwork, dedication, and community support. Thank you to everyone involved.

📢AFC URGING CAUTION AGAINST WILDFIRES📢

With forecasts calling for elevated wind speeds and a dry front passage across the state, the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) strongly discourages any outdoor burning until conditions improve. The agency also points to dropping relative humidity and an increase in wind speed on Saturday as especially concerning.

With the anticipation of critical fire weather conditions, AFC is issuing a Fire Danger Advisory on Friday, March 27. The potential for critical fire weather elevates on Saturday, March 28, increasing the threat issued to a Fire Alert. By Sunday, March 29, the potential for critical fire weather decreases slightly, lowering the threat issued to a Fire Danger Advisory.

The combination of these conditions creates a greater-than-average potential for outdoor fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer – and more of the agency’s firefighting resources – to contain and ultimately control. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.

Prescribed burn permits will be limited to only Certified Prescribed Burn Managers on Friday. Permits for outdoor burning will not be issued to anyone on Saturday. The AFC plans to resume regular permit issuing on Sunday, March 29, provided improved weather conditions. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

In the last seven days, 147 wildfires have burned approximately 5,600 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a large wildfire in Wilcox County (963 acres), one for 464 acres in Montgomery County, one for 505 acres in Marengo, and four others over 200 acres in Choctaw, Covington, Etowah, and Walker counties.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets as well as its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family and friends. Thank you for your many years of service.

Over the weekend, we received the difficult news that our friend and former colleague, Greg Pinkard, passed away.

Greg spent 10 years in the State Fire Marshal’s Office working cases in North Alabama, part of his stellar 30-year career in law enforcement. He retired from the SFMO in 2021.

We share in the deep loss felt by his family and hope you will keep them in your thoughts during the difficult days ahead.

We will never forget you, Greg.

Around 12:00 PM today, we received a mutual aid call from Tri-Community Fire Department Station 5. They had been dispatched to a barn on fire in Flat Rock. The barn contained hay rolls and equipment. We were able to provide man power and assist in maintaining a water supply.
