The Suffern Police Department Detective Bureau, in partnership with the Rockland County Intelligence Center, recently conducted a proactive sweep of 35 local businesses to check for ATM and credit card skimming devices. We are pleased to report that no devices were detected.

Skimming devices are illegal tools used by criminals to capture card information during legitimate transactions, often without the victim’s knowledge. This stolen data can then be used to commit fraud or identity theft.

Proactive detection efforts like this help safeguard our community by preventing financial crimes before they occur, protecting both residents and local businesses. The Suffern Police Department remains committed to staying ahead of emerging threats and ensuring the security of our community.

Stay safe, Suffern.

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

Our community has reported receiving this “Notice of Default” regarding traffic and toll violations. While it looks official at first glance, it is 100% fake. Can you spot the red flags?

The Seals: Look closely at both the seals at the top and bottom. The wording on the seals is illegible and or misspelled.

The QR Code: Real New York courts or the DMV will not send you a high-pressure letter demanding you “Scan a QR code” to pay immediately to avoid arrest or suspension.

The Urgency: Scammers use “Final Warnings” and tight deadlines (like the March 25th date shown) to make you act before you think.

The Bottom Line: If you receive this, DO NOT scan the QR code. Scanning it likely leads to a fraudulent payment site designed to steal your credit card info.

What to do:

Delete/Ignore: If it’s a text or email, block the sender.

Verify: If you’re worried about actual tickets, check the official NYS DMV website.

Share: Tell your neighbors, especially those who might be more vulnerable to “legal” looking scams.
