This week, they began a six-week orientation program. During that time, they’ll work with department instructors to learn SLFD operations and expectations, complete hands-on fire and EMS training, and prepare to join their assigned crews.

Several Sugar Land Fire Department members are currently deployed with the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force to support operations at the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto and Jack counties. The fire has burned approximately 90,000 acres.

Our personnel are providing medical support and force protection for wildland firefighters working on the fire line. They have also been training alongside EMTF All-Hazards Team Alpha during the deployment.

We’re heading into the halfway stretch of hurricane season, and we have a new guest coming to town. 🌧️

Tropical Depression 5 has officially been upgraded to Tropical Storm Edouard. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, with heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding being the primary concerns throughout the day.

While current forecasts indicate Edouard will only have minimal impacts for Sugar Land, conditions can change, so it’s a good time to stay weather aware and prepared.

A few reminders:
-Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.
-Charge phones and other essential devices in case of power outages, and have flashlights and extra batteries ready.
-Secure or bring in loose outdoor items that could be moved by wind or heavy rain.
-Clear leaves and debris from storm drains around your property to help keep water flowing.
-Stay up to date with the latest forecast and weather information from the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office and local officials.

Hopefully, our guest keeps moving along, but it's a good time to keep an eye on the forecast and stay weather aware.

A disturbance in the Gulf could bring several inches of rain to our area this week. Forecasts can change, so now is a good time to keep an eye on the weather and make sure you’re prepared for potentially heavy rainfall.

Sugar Land Fire Department crews are currently working a structure fire in the Settlers Park neighborhood.

All residents are reported out of the home.

Please avoid the area and expect emergency vehicles to remain on scene for an extended period.

We will provide an update as more information becomes available.

All Intersections are now clear and open. There was no Hazmat exposure or leaks and all diesel fuel was been contained.

TRAFFIC UPDATE: August 28, 1:20 PM

The diesel spill has been contained.

The following intersections are expected to remain closed for several hours:
• Easton Avenue / US 90
• SH 6 / US 90 — lower lanes closed; upper lanes remain open and accessible
• Stadium Drive / US 90
• University Boulevard / US 90
• Main Street / US 90
Please continue to avoid the area when possible and use alternate routes.

**Traffic is expected to be disrupted for the Savannah Banana's game this evening at Constellation Field. Attendees are advised to take the main lanes of SH 6 over US-90, or access Burney Rd to Stadium Dr via West Airport Blvd.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Sugar Land Fire and Police are on scene of a collision involving a train and an 18-wheeler on Highway 90 at Easton Avenue.
Fire personnel have assessed the occupants of the train and truck, and no major injuries have been reported. Fort Bend County HazMat is responding to assist with a diesel leak. Crews are also evaluating the train’s hazardous materials freight to confirm there has been no compromise to any rail cars.
Sugar Land Police are investigating the cause of the collision.

**Westbound lanes of Highway 90 may be impacted for the next couple of hours, with traffic impacts potentially extending to Highway 6, University Boulevard and Main Street rail crossings.
**All Railroad crossings between Main and Easton will be closed for the next several hours.

Please avoid the area if possible and use an alternate route.

Over the weekend, A Shift had the opportunity to train inside homes under construction in the new Ryehill development.

The unfinished homes allowed crews to see construction features normally hidden and to practice moving and working through residential structures.

A big thank you to Del Webb for providing access to the homes and supporting this training opportunity.
