Big news to share! 🗞️✨

After 20 years of extraordinary service and leadership with The Arc of Fort Bend County, our CEO, Laura LaVigne, is retiring.

Laura leaves knowing she's part of a lasting legacy—one built with an incredible Board of Directors, passionate volunteers, generous community supporters, and an outstanding staff who share an unwavering commitment to Quality of Life for All.

While we are sad to see her go, we all have great confidence in what she's leaving behind and where we're going next. The Arc is strong, mission-focused, and surrounded by a community that cares deeply about the individuals we serve.

And the future is bright! It is our pleasure to announce that the Board has selected Karri Axtell, J.D. to serve as the organization’s next CEO.

Karri has been a valued member of The Arc family since October 2017, serving as our Advocacy and Youth Programs Director. Her deep personal connection to the mission, combined with her experience, passion, and dedication to those we serve, makes her well prepared to lead the organization into its next chapter.

The Arc of Fort Bend County was pleased to host more than 70 family, friends, and special guests on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the All The Little Things Count’s (ATLTC) Learning Center in Missouri City for a building dedication in honor of Dr. James D. Condrey, DDS.

As a resident of Fort Bend County, Dr. Condrey founded Fort Bend Dental Associates and led the practice as CEO for 40 years. Most recently, he served as the Board Chair on The George Foundation's Board of Trustees.

The Board of Directors and staff of The Arc are deeply grateful for the generosity of The George Foundation and for the vision and support that Dr. Condrey provided throughout the years. Through his leadership and commitment to improving lives, he helped secure funding that will sustain and enhance this facility as a place of learning, growth, and opportunity for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for generations to come.

During the ceremony, his son, Greg, shared a personal story about his aunt Mary Lee Condrey, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. She was the first individual to inspire Dr. Condrey's passion and heart for IDD. As a young man, Dr. Condrey often fought for her and defended her right to services.

This building is a thriving Learning Center where adults with IDD gain meaningful skills, confidence, independence, and connection. Every day, lives are enriched within these walls, and possibilities are expanded.

Through the building dedication, his legacy will continue to impact individuals and families like his beloved sister for generations to come.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a proposed rule outlining how states must implement the Medicaid work requirements enacted in H.R. 1. The public comment period is open through July 31.
Please share your comments and personal experiences through The Arc's website and encourage others to do the same. We are urging CMS to withdraw or pause the rule.
Strengthen protections for people with disabilities and serious health conditions by making it easier to qualify for the medically frail exemption.
Prevent eligible people from losing Medicaid because of paperwork or administrative barriers.
