Today we conducted residential wildfire risk assessments on the Toddy Pond and Newbury Neck roads. Selecting random properties on these roads, this work filled a gap in the coverage of assessments on major roads in Surry that we conducted in June of 2023.

These assessments were conducted with SWCA Environmental Consultants who are working to complete the Community Wildfire Protection Plan for the Blue Hill Peninsula. This data will be used for planning purposes and future grant applications to identify and fund remediation for the biggest risks for both wildfire and structural firefighting.

Congratulations to Surry Firefighter Andrew McChesney for graduating from the Hancock County Fire Academy today!

Andrew spent the past six months working with 20 other cadets from across Hancock County to complete the training program and recently passed his state certification exams for Firefighter 1 & 2.

Yesterday, several of our firefighters took time away from their regular jobs and personal responsibilities to bring our engines and tankers to Bucksport for our annual hose testing.

Annual hose testing is a critical part of that process. Every fire hose on our apparatus is inspected and pressure tested to ensure it can safely withstand the demands of firefighting operations. A damaged or failed hose can put firefighters at risk and delay the delivery of water during an emergency. By testing our hose annually, we help ensure our equipment remains reliable, safe, and ready to perform when seconds count.

While emergency responses often receive the spotlight, it’s days like yesterday that help ensure we’re prepared for tomorrow’s emergencies.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the hose testing a success and helping keep our department response ready for the year ahead.

We're excited to announce that we've been awarded a grant from the Maine Municipal Association for over $1500 to purchase traffic control signs for our new engine.

Every year first responders are injured and killed in secondary accidents at emergency scenes on roadways. Even on smaller accidents, we take pride in setting up traffic control to provide safety for law enforcement and tow truck operators to do their jobs safely.

When accidents happen on roadways, setting up these warning signs is crucial in providing advance warning to other drivers to slow down before they get to the accident scene. The signs pictured are from our rescue and having a matching set on our engine helps ensure we can get signs deployed safely and quickly as often as possible based on the type of call and number of volunteers available to respond.

Thank you for your patience, attention, and cooperation while driving through emergency scenes, your cooperation is critical to keeping everyone safe.

Today Firefighters D.Astbury and J. Wallace-DeJulio paid their respects to fallen firefighter Andrew Cross who tragically lost his life in the Searsmont Robbin’s lumber mill fire. He will be forever remembered for his courage, strength and dedication to the fire service as well as his town! We may not be in the same county, but we’re in the same family always! The surry fire department extends our condolences to Andrew’s family and the Morrill Fire Department as well as all of the other firefighters that were injured!
