Educate. Agitate. Organize. The Syracuse Peace Council is the oldest local, autonomous, grassroots peace and social justice organization in the United States.

We are very proud of our rich history of acting to make our community and the world a better place. Our Statement of Purpose is as follows: The Syracuse Peace Council (SPC), founded in 1936, is an antiwar/social justice organization. We are community-based, autonomous, and funded by the contributions of our supporters. SPC educates, agitates and organizes for a world where war, violence and exploitation in any form will no longer exist.We challenge the existing unjust power relationships among nations, among people and between ourselves and the environment. As members, we work to replace inequality, hierarchy, domination and powerlessness with mutual respect, personal empowerment, cooperation and a sense of community. Present social injustices cannot be understood in isolation from each other nor can they be overcome without recognizing their economic and militaristic roots. SPC stresses a strategy that makes these connections clear. We initiate and support activities that help build this sense of community and help tear down the walls of oppression. A fundamental basis for peace and justice is an economic system that places human need above monetary profit. We establish relationships among people based on cooperation rather than competition or the threat of destruction. Our political values and personal lives shape and reflect each other. In both we are committed to nonviolent means of conflict resolution and to a process of decision-making that responds to the needs of us all. Join us on November 5th at Tucker Missionary Baptist Church for an important town hall discussion about Reparations for Black New Yorkers. Hosted by the New York Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. We will discuss our recent report on Reparations The Other New York: The Legacy of Slavery and the Case for Reparations Now.

For hundreds of years, Black people in New York faced slavery, unfair laws, and discrimination. Kept out of good jobs, owning thriving business, safe housing, clean environments, and fair schools.

Slavery has impacted how much wealth families have, their health, and the neighborhoods they can live in.

Reparations are a way to repair that harm. This can mean cash payments, but it can also mean targeting housing policies, education, health care, and voting rights. The goal is to make things fair and to help Black families build strong futures. Come enjoy food, refreshments, and join us to help shape the future of New York State.

New York has started to study this issue in 2023 after the passing of bill S.1163-A/A.7691.

We invite you to learn more about Reparations, share your ideas and stories, and provide important feedback to NY. Whether you’re new to the conversation or already engaged in the fight for reparations, your voice matters.
