On July 31,1704, Mission San Luis was evacuated and set ablaze to prevent its use by the approaching English. The Spanish Franciscan mission was built in 1656, two miles west of present-day Tallahassee as part of Spain's effort to colonize the area and convert the Timucuan and Apalachee Indians to Christianity. Today, through hands-on workshops, archaeological exhibits and reconstructed buildings, Mission San Luis immerses visitors in the life of the Apalachee and Spanish who lived on site during the 1700s. Florida’s Gulf Coast is home to hundreds of historical communities steeped with Florida history. Lanark-by-the-Sea is one of these places. Founded in the late 1800’s, the town was anchored by the luxurious Lanark Inn, which drew wealthy guests from across the country. In the mid-20th century, Lanark became the home of Camp Gordon Johnston, which trained soldiers in the amphibious warfare that would be used on D-Day. Last week, as part of the Select Florida International Business Development Mission, Secretary of State Cord Byrd led members of the delegation on a visit to The National Robotarium at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh where the group saw cutting-edge robotics, healthcare technology, and quantum technology facilities.

Born on July 26, 1776, artist George Catlin created a lithograph of Seminole leader Osceola in 1837 at Fort Moultrie, just months before Osceola’s passing in early 1838. 150 years later, his lithograph inspired quilter Rita Denenberg to stitch this Osceola Quilt which is in the collections of the Museum of Florida History. In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, Secretary of State Cord Byrd presented British Consul General to Miami Rufus Drabble with a framed copy of this 1776 map of the Southern British Colonies featuring Florida. On his last day serving as Consul General, the gift was a token of his friendship and in recognition of his hard work in advancing the Florida UK relationship. Secretary Byrd, along with Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue, and Space Florida President and CEO Rob Long made the presentation as part of the Select Florida Leadership Mission to the United Kingdom earlier this week.

YEEHAW! Today is National Cowboy Day, and Florida has its fair share of cowboy culture. Florida’s famous ‘cracker cowboys,’ named after the sound of their whips during annual roundups, were essential to Florida’s development. They drove cattle to market while living off the land. Today, cowboys fuel Florida’s beef and dairy industries, which together add over a billion dollars to Florida’s economy. Secretary of State Cord Byrd spoke about the enduring concepts of Adam Smith this week when he visited Adam Smith's Panmure House in Edinburgh as part of the Select Florida International Business Development Mission. During the visit, Florida signed a Letter of Friendship between Florida International University and Heriot-Watt University establishing a framework for academic cooperation.

“Our commitment to economic freedom, world class education, research, and business-friendly policies proves that Florida is leading on the global stage. As we remember the legacy of Adam Smith, this academic partnership will pass these important principles onto the next generation,” Secretary of State Cord Byrd.
