Today, we want to recognize Maya Varney as she moves on from her role as our Rocky Hill Captain at the beginning of November to focus on her studies. 📚🚑

Maya has been one of our longest-serving officers, from her time at our Winsted partnership to helping build our Rocky Hill team from the ground up. Being a leader is about more than holding a title. It's about the time you put in, the people you support, and the impact you leave behind, and Maya embodies that. She's helped, guided, and supported just about everyone on this team at all hours, and she has a real gift for helping new providers find their footing.

The best part? She's not going anywhere! Maya will remain part of the NEFR family, and we're so excited for her next chapter. Thank you, Maya. We can't wait to watch you be a rockstar in everything you do, including all the amazing things ahead as a paramedic! 💙

Navigating Neurological Emergencies | EMS & FIRE PRO Expo

Join Thomas Latosek, MD, MS, NRP, EMS-I, Medical Director, Physician, and Paramedic with Northeast Fire-Rescue in Torrington, CT, for an advanced, case-based look at managing complex neurological emergencies.

Dr. Latosek is a board-certified Emergency Physician and Critical Care/Resuscitation Fellow at the University of Connecticut and Hartford Hospital. His clinical career began in Connecticut EMS in 2007 as a paramedic and EMS instructor, giving him a perspective that bridges prehospital care, emergency medicine, and critical care.

In Navigating Neurological Emergencies, attendees will move beyond the basic “positive” stroke screen to examine intracranial hemorrhage, stroke, and status epilepticus in both 911 and interfacility transport settings.

Through case-based discussion, Dr. Latosek will explore strategies for optimizing cerebral perfusion, preventing secondary brain injury, recognizing and treating status epilepticus, applying EMS stroke scales, determining appropriate patient disposition, and making informed clinical decisions when neurological emergencies become complex.

Go beyond recognition and strengthen your approach to managing the critically ill neurological patient.

Meet Alexis Savage who recently joined our Kent & Sharon teams! Alexis is a Northwest Corner native who attended Sharon Center School and HVRHS before earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology and history from St. Lawrence University. 📚

After 13 years working on Wall Street, she decided it was time for a change and returned to Litchfield County. While she originally planned to pursue nursing, after earning her EMT certification, she discovered her passion for EMS & we couldn't be happier that she did. 🚑🚨

Please join us in welcoming Mike to the Kent Ambulance team! 🚑

Mike brings over seven years of experience as a volunteer firefighter with the Winsted Fire Department & also serves as an EMT in Winsted and Canaan. When he's not working as a first responder, he works as a medical technician at High Watch Recovery Center, performing blood draws, EKGs, and other patient care. 🚨

Emergency services is a second career for Mike. After a decade in the corporate world with a background in chemistry, he made the leap into emergency response and patient care. He’s continuing his education with the goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist. ⚕

Outside of work, Mike is an Eagle Scout, vintage race car driver, and unrepentant nerd. We’re excited to have his experience, curiosity, and dedication on our team. Welcome aboard, Mike! 💙
