Just a few things that need addressed -
1. Why are we spending resources on subdivisions?
Most subdivisions that are in the County of Tipton are public subdivisions, meaning that they are under our jurisdiction and are part of our road inventory. They are mostly low speed, low traffic areas, which means they do not require as much maintenance. Most of these subdivisions have not had any improvements done on them in 20 plus years. The residents of these subdivisions are taxpayers too and their roads deserve the maintenance and resurfacing as required. That is why we have paved half our subdivisions last year and the other half will be done this year.
2. Why does Tipton County do so much Chip and Seal on our roads instead of Asphalt?
Chip and Seal is the most economical choice. We know that it is not the most popular method, as we would LOVE to pave with asphalt, every single road in Tipton County. This, however, is not feasible with our available budget as asphalt paving is much more expensive. 20 years ago, a good portion of our roads were still gravel, we worked very hard to convert them all with the exception of a couple, to chip and seal because we were inundated with complaints of dust. Our County does not have the tax base that other surrounding Counties have, hence the smaller budget, hence Chip and Seal.
3. Property Taxes.
The Tipton County Highway Department does not receive property taxes for our road funding. Those taxes fund our schools, Courthouse Offices, Dispatch and the Sheriff's Department. Our funding comes from the fuel tax and the wheel tax. Our portion of the fuel tax is based on a formula of road mileage and total population.
4. Is Division Road the new SR28?
No. Division Road is under the jurisdiction of the Tipton County Highway Department. Division road was designated the official truck route to reduce truck traffic through the City of Tipton. SR28 ends at CR560 West and begins again at SR19 going East.
