Several more fence sections have been adopted in the Adopt-a-Fence program, with additional sections scheduled to be planted between now and the weekend. We still have a few unclaimed sections. If you'd like to be part of making Unity more beautiful, send an email to [email protected]

All materials are provided, and it takes about an hour to plant, a little longer if there are toddlers "helping."

Plants and mulch have been donated, but we welcome sponsors who would like to help underwrite the cost of good quality soil for planting.

(Names with the pictures. The only one I forgot to get a picture of was Jessi Norsworthy. Hoping to fix that error soon!)

You never know what will be going on at the Field of Dreams. Today it was a budding unicyclist. Maybe a candidate for Cirque du Soleil in a few years!

Parks and Rec activities coming up this fall

~Photo contest: Start taking pictures (or use ones from the past three years) of “fall-ish” things. Categories will be similar to past photo contests, but we are adding Halloween and Back to School categories… and yes, homeschoolers can participate! Watch for the announcement in the next couple of weeks. The photo contest is open to residents (seasonal or permanent) of all RSU3 towns plus Albion and Burnham.

~Senior Social: Starting up again in mid-September, we will be meeting at the Unity Historical Society until winter drives us out. Note that we are changing the meeting from Wednesday to Thursday afternoons, second and fourth Thursday of the month. The plan (subject to change) is to have a speaker or discussion focusing on some aspect of Unity’s more recent (yours and mine!) history at one meeting each month, and different activities and presentations as well as social time at the alternate meetings. We are looking for someone to assist the committee with program planning.

~Adopt-a-Fence: Planting starts this weekend, and there are still fence sections (the wooden rail fence at Field of Dreams) unclaimed. All plants and planting material provided. Contact UPRC for details if you’d like to be involved.

~Zumba and Pickleball: Both will start up again in the Unity Elementary gym in October. Pickleball will be available two days this year, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

~Puzzlepalooza: Our next timed puzzle competition will take place on Sunday, October 25th.

~Pumpkin carving: We look forward to hosting this program, which was well-attended last year, at the Field of Dreams, date and details TBD.

Today's thank you goes to Huhtamaki in Waterville for the donation of this popcorn cart to UPRC. Watch for it at future events (once we figure out how to assemble it)!

Thanks also to Justin Serrano, who overheard me telling the selectmen that we'd like to have one and asking the mill to donate it.

Shout out to Envirem, right here in Unity, for donating all the remaining mulch needed to complete the planting on the Triangle and under the fencing at the Field of Dreams. You rock!

ADOPT-A-FENCE

Calling all families, clubs, troops, teams, businesses, groups (formal or just friends), and individuals!

Do you want to be part of the rebuild of the Field of Dreams but can't wield the heavy equipment? Unity Parks and Recreation still has access to many, many daylily plants in a wide variety of colors, and we're setting up an Adopt-a-Fence project to plant them under the wooden post and rail fencing that lines the Bangor Road and entrance to the park. This will not only beautify the entrance, but save the town the time and/or expense of w**d whacking under the fence rails.

Participants would be responsible for planting one section (There are 16 total) of fence (can do more if wanted) and watering their section once a week (one gallon should be enough or if we get solid rain you can skip) until October and again next spring and summer, plus w**ding from time to time. Total time commitment for planting would be about an hour and a half, can be scheduled around your availability, and all materials will be provided.

We will be making small wooden signs for each section with the name of the individual or group doing the planting. At the end of NEXT summer we will have a prize drawing (prize TBD), with all sections that met the commitment included in the drawing.

We are also looking for sponsors who would be willing to cover the cost of planting supplies for $20 a section.

Please contact UPRC at [email protected] if you'd like to participate.

POSSIBLE RAIN RELOCATION!!
There is rain in the forecast (which we need, but why does it need to fall at exactly and only this time?!). If it does rain the movie will still be shown, but will be moved to the Community Center (which is right next door). Still bring blankets if you prefer to sit on the floor. There are folding chairs, but you're also welcome to bring a camp chair if you'd be more comfortable. See you tonight!

Bring a blanket, bring a friend. Snacks will be available (or you can bring your own). There is no charge for this activity, but donations are always appreciated.

Note: If it rains we'll move into the community center right next door!
