With a front remaining draped across the region this weekend, periods of thunderstorms will continue. A few of these Saturday night and Sunday will be capable of producing localized damaging wind gusts and perhaps some hail.

The long-awaited arrival of fall-like weather is still on track for early next week, especially in areas north of I-72 where highs in the 60s will be common beginning Monday. In the meantime, we still have to get through more heat and humidity through the weekend. Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected through Monday, though areas south of I-70 may take until Sunday evening to see any substantial chances of rain.

Neighbors are often among the first people available when something goes wrong. Knowing one another before an emergency makes it easier to share information, recognize when someone may need help, and look out for each other.

You don't need a complicated neighborhood emergency program to get started.

Start with a conversation.

Know who lives around you. Exchange contact information with someone you trust. Talk about how you might communicate if an emergency affects your neighborhood.

Strong communities are built before emergencies happen.

Agriculture is one of the leading industries in Illinois and farmers across the state will be moving equipment along roadways throughout the upcoming months. As farmers travel between fields, sharing the road safely and being vigilant about your surroundings can help prevent crashes involving tractors and other farm equipment.

Many evacuation centers have restrictions on animals, and veterinary services may be limited following a disaster. Having food, water, medications, vaccination records, and carriers prepared ahead of time helps keep your entire family safe.

If you're prepared for your pets, you're better prepared overall.

What if we got that viral horse that plays the keyboard for kids at Children’s Hospitals and used him on traffic stops?

Picture this:

You’re stopped for going 75 in a 55. You’re upset with yourself. You’re frustrated. You’re late to your kid’s U8 travel sports game. He's playing for the Central District of Eastern Illinois National Title - Diamond Division Championship - C Bracket game . Whatever that means. You paid $4,800 for the season, so you better get there.

The deputy walks up, hands you a citation, and walks away.

You sit there, staring at the ticket. Thinking about your choices.

Then Lil Ron (that’s what we’re calling him) starts playing a little ditty on the keyboard.

Suddenly, everything becomes clear.

You realize the errors of your ways. You vow never to speed recklessly again.
