MAN INJURED IN FREEWAY SHOOTING IN RICHMOND

RICHMOND, Calif. — A victim was injured in a freeway shooting late Monday evening in Richmond following a road rage incident on Interstate 80 (I-80).

On May 25, at approximately 7:33 p.m., officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Oakland Area office were dispatched to a freeway shooting that occurred on eastbound I-80, west of Hilltop Drive.

Responding officers contacted the victim at a secondary location after he exited the freeway to wait for emergency responders. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The CHP’s Golden Gate Division Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and opened an investigation. All lanes of eastbound I-80 at El Portal Drive were temporarily closed to allow officers to process the scene. After speaking with the victim and witnesses, it was determined that the shooting occurred following a road rage incident. Detectives are actively working to identify suspect(s) in this incident, and anyone with information is asked to call the CHP Investigative Tipline at (707) 917-4491.

BICYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH 🚲✅

Recently, Officer Martinez from Golden Gate Division had the opportunity to visit John Swett Elementary School in Martinez for Career Day.

Students learned about the importance of car seat safety, wearing seatbelts, and bicycle safety while asking great questions and engaging throughout the presentation. ✨📚

Traffic safety starts at a young age. Whether riding in a vehicle or on a bicycle, using the proper safety equipment and practicing safe habits can help prevent serious injuries and save lives. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ensure children are properly secured in age-appropriate car seats and always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter. 🚨🚲

Thank you to the staff, students, and families for the warm welcome and for helping us share important traffic safety messages with our youngest future drivers, passengers, and riders.

Suspect Arrested: Road Rage Incident Leads to Firearm Brandishing

The Golden Gate Division Major Crimes Unit investigated an incident that occurred last month on Interstate 880 (I-880) in Oakland after a driver allegedly pointed a firearm at another motorist during a road rage encounter. 🚨

On April 8, 2026, at 7:16 p.m., the Golden Gate Communications Center received reports of a brandishing incident on southbound I-880, south of Brush Street in Oakland. Following a brief exchange during a road rage incident, the suspect allegedly brandished a firearm at the victim.

Through investigative follow-up, detectives identified the suspect and, on April 24, 2026, at approximately 9:26 a.m., conducted a traffic stop that resulted in the suspect being taken into custody without incident.

As part of the investigation, officers also served a search warrant and recovered numerous illegal fi****ms from the suspects residence. The suspect was booked into Santa Rita Jail on multiple felony firearm-related charges.

This case highlights the ongoing work of the Golden Gate Division Major Crimes Unit in investigating violent crimes, identifying suspects, and helping keep dangerous weapons off our roadways and out of our communities.

HOLIDAY ENFORCEMENT PERIOD 🚨 🚓

Alright Bay Area drivers, we're launching a Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) from Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m., through Monday, May 25, at 11:59 p.m.

During this period, CHP officers will conduct targeted enforcement to identify reckless drivers and emphasize proper seat belt use for drivers and passengers.

Unauthorized Tow Truck Impounded 🚨

Recently, an officer from the Golden Gate Division Commercial Operations Unit conducted an enforcement stop that resulted in a tow truck being impounded after multiple violations were discovered, including expired registration exceeding two years, no insurance, and no operating authority despite prior enforcement contacts.

Commercial towing companies are required to meet specific safety and operational standards designed to help ensure tow trucks are properly maintained, inspected, insured, and legally authorized to operate. Those regulations exist to help protect stranded motorists, roadside workers, and everyone sharing the roadway.

The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.
