The Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department has had a busy few days, providing mutual aid to several neighboring communities.

On Sunday evening, Engine 343 and Tower Ladder 345 responded to two separate fires in Elmont, assisting the Elmont Fire Department with operations.

On Tuesday morning, Engine 343 stood by while Tower Ladder 345 responded to the scene of a fire for the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, providing coverage and assistance as needed.

Later Tuesday afternoon, Engine 343 was back on the road, responding to the scene of a house fire in Franklin Square.

These responses came in addition to the Department continuing to protect and respond to emergencies within the Village of Valley Stream.

The Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department is proud to continue working alongside our neighboring departments whenever called upon. Thank you to all of our members for their continued dedication and commitment to serving our community and our neighbors.

October 4th was a busy evening for the members of Engine 343 as we answered multiple calls across the area.

At 18:47 hours, Engine 343 responded into Elmont for mutual aid on a Signal 10 house fire, assisting the Elmont Fire Department with operations at the scene.

While members were packing up and cleaning up from the first incident, Elmont was dispatched to a second house fire at 350 Hill Ave. at approximately 19:21 hours. Engine 343 once again responded to assist.

After completing operations at the second fire and beginning our trip back, Engine 343 was toned out once again, this time for a reported gas leak on Meacham Ave. We were requested to assist at that incident as well.

A Busy Weekend for Engine 3
With the bad weather that moved through the area this past weekend, Engine 3 was kept busy, responding to two major motor vehicle accidents here in our community.

Our members answered the call and worked through the challenging weather conditions to assist those involved and make the scenes safe.
Here are some photos from the incidents.

Stay safe and use extra caution on the roads, especially during periods of heavy rain and poor weather.

🇺🇸 Remembering Lt. Peter C. Martin 🇺🇸

On September 11, 2001, 343 members of the FDNY made the ultimate sacrifice. Among them was Lieutenant Peter C. Martin of Rescue 2 — and a member of our own Valley Stream Fire Department family.

Peter joined the Valley Stream Fire Department at just 18 years old, becoming a member of Engine Company No. 3. Although he eventually moved out of the Village, he never forgot where his firefighting career began.

Peter went on to serve 22 years with the FDNY, ultimately becoming a Lieutenant with Rescue 2. He was decorated numerous times for bravery and had previously participated in the search and rescue operation following the Oklahoma City bombing.

On September 11th, Peter responded with Rescue 2 to the World Trade Center. He was 43 years old when he gave his life in the line of duty.
Peter’s wife, Alice, once spoke about his connection to his roots in Valley Stream. Even after the family moved away, Peter would always say:
“My heart belongs to Engine 3.”
Those words have a special meaning to us.

Peter may have moved away from Valley Stream, but Engine 3 never left his heart — and Peter will never leave ours.

Today, Engine 343 remembers Lt. Peter C. Martin — firefighter, lieutenant, father, brother, and hero.
Rest easy, Lieutenant.
Your heart belonged to Engine 3.
We will never forget. 🇺🇸

🚨 Throwback Thursday 🚨

On September 3, 2023, at approximately 2:55 PM, the Valley Stream Fire Department was dispatched for a reported house fire on Derby Street.

Upon arrival, Engine 343 transmitted a Signal 10 for a fully involved shed with extension to the house.

Two lines were stretched off Engine 343, quickly extinguishing the fire and preventing further extension into the residence.
