A message from our neighbor Southampton Village PD regarding westbound travel during this US Open week.

Due to the influx of visitors this week, expect heavy traffic in and around Southampton Village. The Southampton Village Police Department highly encourages all vehicles to stay on County Rd 39 and Montauk Highway for your afternoon westbound travels. Expect road closures and detours as we try to keep the main arteries (County Rd 39 and Montauk Highway) flowing.

Community Policing & public engagement in action! Our staff has been busy with the Citizen's Police Academy graduation, DARE culminations, Drug Take Back days, Law Enforcement Torch Run participation and the Town Job Fair among many, many other department initiatives. Public Safety and community service are foundations of our law enforcement mission. As we work through the busiest time of year for our officers, and focus our efforts on the seasonal surge of traffic and call volume, many thanks go out to all our staff who go above and beyond, day in and day out.

TRAFFIC SAFETY REMINDERS: With Memorial Day weekend upon us, please be patient and careful on our extremely heavily traveled roadways.

Slow down, use hands free devices, share the road and yield to cyclists and pedestrian traffic. Move over for emergency first responder lights. Yield to oncoming vehicles while passing cyclists or runners. Share the road!

Cyclists must travel with traffic and obey the rules of the road. Runners & walkers use sidewalks and shoulders when possible, go against traffic if on the roadway, and keep one ear bud out so you can stay alert to vehicles.

When entering crosswalks please be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to traffic. Vehicles must yield to pedestrians within crosswalks, but do not just walk out in front of vehicles from the curb without gauging traffic.

E- Bikes and E- scooters are not allowed on any sidewalks. Wear a helmet and obey state & county laws.

As always, don't drink & drive, designate a drive or use taxis and ride share services.

Our population triples during the summer months, please help us keep the roads and our community safe.
