Memorial Day should never become so routine that we forget why it exists.
Today is not simply about a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. It is about the absence left behind ā the empty seats at dinner tables, the families forever changed, and the generations of Americans who carried the burden of service knowing they might never come home.
Freedom has always had a cost paid by someone else on behalf of all of us.
Today, we pause to remember those who made that sacrifice and the loved ones who continue to carry it forward long after the ceremonies end.
We owe them more than remembrance for one day each year. We owe them gratitude worthy of their sacrifice.
