Bill Mazeroski was my childhood hero. I remember just like it was yesterday watching on TV as Maz stepped up to the plate in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees. He smacked a home run to walk it off and give the Pirates their third World Series championship. It remains today as the best moment in Pirates history. You could practically hear the celebration all the way in Farmington that night.

Today, I saw Bill’s statue in Pittsburgh and thanked him for the fond memories he made that night for so many of us in West Virginia.

My heart is in Washington today as we celebrate the life of my friend and former colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, and anyone who was lucky enough to call him a friend. Lindsey truly was something special, and I'm thankful for his friendship and his decades of service to our country.

Gayle and I send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the entire Graham family and all of his associates and friends. Lindsey was a good friend — a person you could always talk to and work with. No matter how tense the subject may be, he could put levity to everything.

Every politician wishes they had likability, and Lindsey had it in spades. No matter what you thought of him, if you ever knew him or talked to him, you walked away liking him, and that’s a gift.

Lindsey will be missed by the U.S. Senate, the people of South Carolina, and all of those who came to know him over the years. Please join Gayle and me in praying for the Graham family during this difficult time.

Happy 250th birthday, America! Today, we celebrate this grand experiment of ours and the men and women who have always put our country before themselves in the true spirit of public service, and have poured their blood, sweat and tears into protecting and defending the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy every day. We’re not as divided as some people would like to make you think. Today, and every day, we should all be proud to be Americans 🇺🇸

When the parties become so focused on control, they eventually lose control. That's exactly what happened to the Republican Party, and it's happening to the Democratic Party today. The extremes are driving the conversation while the majority of Americans are being left behind.

It's time to open our primaries, restore competition, and give the 47% of Americans who don't identify with either party a real voice.

10 years ago today, our state experienced an unthinkable tragedy. Flash flooding destroyed thousands of homes, took 23 lives, and forever changed communities that so many West Virginians call home.

The days and weeks that followed were some of the most difficult that I experienced during my time in public service. But in the wake of unfathomable loss, we also saw the very best of our state. West Virginians came together to help those who lost everything, donating supplies and getting in the thick mud to help their neighbors dig out, one shovel at a time.

Please join me in praying for the families of those who lost everything 10 years ago today. We will never forget those that we lost, and we will never stop supporting the families and communities who are continuing to rebuild and recover.

WVU Baseball showed the entire country how special our state truly is. Our team rose to the challenge of the College World Series, and our state rose to the occasion in supporting our young men as they made history. I couldn’t be more proud of our WVU baseball players, Head Coach Steve Sabins and his staff, and the thousands of fans who represented the very best of our state in Omaha!

WATCH: George Washington saw this coming.

He warned that political parties would become powerful enough to subvert the power of the people. He was right.

Today, Democrats and Republicans have taken partisanship to the extreme, gerrymandering districts, closing primaries, and protecting the system instead of the people.

Out of 435 congressional districts, fewer than 40 are truly competitive.

That’s not healthy democracy. That’s a rigged system. It’s time to restore competition and give power back to the American people.

I'm thankful that the good Lord gave us so much time with Judge John Copenhaver. From his service in the United States Army during World War II to his nearly half a century of service on the federal bench, Judge Copenhaver dedicated his life to giving back to our state and our country.

Judge Copenhaver was simply impeccable as a jurist, and set a high standard for generations of attorneys who argued in his courtroom. He administered the law with a sharp mind, a steady hand, and a deep respect for the rule of law.

West Virginians should be eternally grateful for Judge Copenhaver’s lifetime of service to our state. He was a true public servant and a distinguished West Virginian. Please join me in praying for Judge Copenhaver’s family, friends, and loved ones as we celebrate his life and his many contributions to our great nation.
