Our recruits practiced SCBA proficiency during reduced and low-profile maneuvers, an essential self-rescue technique every firefighter must learn and master. Fire Prevention Week is officially here, running from October 4 to 10, 2026. This year, the Public Safety Academy is highlighting a critical modern safety issue under the theme: Charge Into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.
With lithium-ion batteries powering everything from our smartphones to laptops and e-bikes, everyday charging habits play a massive role in community safety. You can protect your household and activate your own fire safety superpower by following these essential guidelines:
• Only use the original cords and power adapters that came with your devices, or certified replacements from trusted manufacturers.
• Charge your devices on hard, flat surfaces. Avoid placing phones, tablets, or laptops on beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can easily build up.
• Do not leave devices charging overnight or unattended near exit pathways, ensuring you always have a clear route out of your home in an emergency.
• Keep batteries and devices at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or extreme heat sources.
Taking a few seconds to check your charging habits can prevent a tragedy. Join the Public Safety Academy this week in prioritizing safety.
