Annual City of Weirton Independence Day Parade to be Held on July 4 at 5 p.m.

WEIRTON – The Annual City of Weirton Independence Day Parade will be held on Saturday, July 4 at 5 p.m. on the city's Main Street.

The annual Independence Day Parade has been a staple of community activities since the City of Weirton was incorporated in 1947 and this year will be followed by a festival celebrating America's 250th birthday.

Over the years the parade has featured the Weir High School band and other local marching bands, fire trucks from Weirton and surrounding communities, local and state politicians, floats sponsored by local businesses and civic organizations, active and former military personnel, classic cars and the Weirton Steel 25-year club.

The parade route begins at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Main Street and proceeds south on Main Street (WV Route 2) to the intersection of Marland Heights Road.

Portions of Main Street that serve as the parade route will be closed for the duration of the parade. The Weirton Millsop Community Center will also be closed on July 4th.

Parade lineup begins at 3:45 p.m. at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Main Street. All participants must be checked in by 4:15 a.m. on parade day.

To register your business or organization for the parade, complete the registration form and return to Park Board Program Director Chris Krishak by Wednesday, June 24.

Registration forms are available at the customer service desk at the Weirton Millsop Community Center.

Parade spectators are reminded that no viewing locations can be reserved in advance of the parade and all attendees must stay off the roadway as the parade passes by.

Area residents are reminded that no vehicles may be parked along Main Street after 8 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and all vehicles parked on Main Street after that time will be towed at the owner's expense.

For more information, contact the WMCC at (304) 797-8520 or the Park Board program office directly at (304) 797-5721

KATHLEEN & PAUL'S CAPTURES JV CHAMPIONSHIP

WEIRTON — Kathleen & Paul's dominated the Junior Varsity division of the Weirton Millsop Community Center (WMCC) Youth Basketball League all season long and Saturday's championship game was no exception.

Kathleen & Paul's defeated the Franciscan University Barons 19-3 to claim the Junior Varsity championship at the WMCC gymnasium to cap a perfect season at 13-0.

Barrett Frye led Kathleen & Paul's with 11 points and Gino Garbin chipped in seven points. The only other point scored for Kathleen & Paul's in the game was added by Grady Cox, who had been the team's leading scorer all season averaging 10.2 points per game.

It was Kathleen & Paul's second straight JV title game appearance, losing by a point in last year's championship and finishing the season 13-1.

Leo Fair scored the Barons only points on 3-pointer.

Both teams played solid defense as the game remained scoreless through the first 10 minutes.

Garbin got the scoring started for Kathleen & Paul's with layup five minutes into the contest and moments later converted a 3-point play when he collected a rebound, made a layup and drained the free throw after being fouled during the shot to make it 5-0.

Just seconds later, Frye grabbed a steal and scored on a layup. Both Frye and Garbin scored on short jumpers with about two minutes to play in the half and Frye gave Kathleen & Paul's a 10-0 lead at the break, hitting one of two free throws with time expired at the half.

Fair's trey made it 16-3 with five minutes left to play but Kathleen & Paul's finished the game on a 6-0 spurt.

Despite taking the loss, the Barons played solid defense, holding Kathleen & Paul's to 16 points less than its regular season average of 35 points a game.
