How it started vs how it’s going.

We proudly announce that Firefighter Carissa Gordon graduated from Paramedic School today!

Paramedic School is over 1,400 hours of training and education that includes didactic, labs, hospital clinical, field clinical, and successful completion of a 200 hour field capstone where competency in EMS skills and management of patient care is evaluated under an experienced Paramedic preceptor. The successful completion of this program over the course of a year requires a tremendous amount of dedication to the program itself, in addition to working a full time job and life outside of the firehouse or classroom.

We have been fortunate enough to see first hand the hard work and dedication that Firefighter Gordon has put in to being successful in this program, as well as the support from her family, friends, and brother and sister firefighters. The instructors and preceptor of Firefighter Gordon praised her work ethic, knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide the highest level of care to her patients.

Our department is proud of the hard work and dedication our members commit to the training and education to provide the highest level of care and service to the community.

Congratulations Firefighter Gordon!

As the temperatures drop, portable space heaters become a popular way to stay warm. When used improperly, they can also create a serious fire hazard.

Wells FD and Wells PD assist lost hikers

This afternoon the Wells Fire Department and Wells Police Department were requested to assist two hikers who had lost their way off of a trail in the woods off of Bald Hill Rd and required assistance.

The hikers had phones that were fully charged prior to their hike, stayed calm, and once realizing they needed assistance, stayed in place and maintained contact with Wells Dispatchers. Wells dispatchers provided responders with the approximate location of the hikers based on their gps coordinates of their cell phones when they called 911.

Wells FD and PD positioned resources in an area closest to the GPS location provided by Wells Dispatch and entered the woods together. Drones from both agencies were utilized to view the area the hikers were missing and monitored the track and direction of PD and FD resources. Wells FD and PD made contact with the hikers in 10 minutes from the time of entry into the woods.

The hikers did not require any medical attention and were assisted out of the woods by Wells FD and Wells PD.

Great work by Wells Dispatch for maintaining contact with the hikers and the coordinated efforts of Wells FD, Wells PD, and Wells Dispatch for quick contact and safe exit of the woods by the hikers and public safety personnel.

We are ‘charging’ into fire prevention week for this years theme of ‘Charge into Fire safety- Safe Charging is a Superpower’. This year’s focus is on the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

The common lithium-ion battery powered items we use and rely on everyday can be an overlooked fire danger. Know the risks and take the steps to reduce the risks of lithium-ion battery fires!

STORM PREPAREDNESS MESSAGE

Residents are urged to prepare today for a coastal storm expected to affect Wells Friday through Monday.

The storm is expected to bring strong northeast winds, periods of rain, high surf, elevated coastal water levels, and the potential for localized coastal and tidal flooding, particularly around high tide.

The most significant coastal impacts are currently expected Saturday and Sunday, with conditions potentially remaining unsettled into Monday.

Coastal and flood-prone areas

Residents in and around Wells Beach, Drakes Island, Moody Point, the Webhannet River, Merriland River, and other low-lying coastal and tidal areas should be especially attentive to changing conditions.

Town personnel will monitor known vulnerable roads and drainage locations as conditions develop. Residents should be prepared for the possibility of temporary road closures if flooding, erosion, debris, or unsafe conditions occur.

Pay particular attention around high tide
Storm surge and wave action can produce the greatest coastal impacts when they coincide with high astronomical tide.

Current tide predictions include:
• Saturday: approximately 9.5 ft around 11:29 AM
• Sunday: approximately 9.9 ft around 12:06 PM
• Monday: approximately 10.2 ft around 12:45 PM

These are astronomical tide predictions and do not include storm surge or wave action. Actual water levels may therefore be higher.

Stay informed
Residents should monitor official Town of Wells and National Weather Service information throughout the storm. Conditions and forecasts may change as the storm approaches.

If a road is flooded:
TURN AROUND — DON'T DROWN.
Please do not attempt to drive through floodwater or approach the shoreline to observe storm conditions.

Prepare today. Stay informed. Stay off flooded roads and dangerous coastal areas. Look out for your neighbors.

Our crews spent time yesterday conducting basic vehicle extrication training with Kennebunk Fire Rescue and Arundel Fire Rescue.

Vehicle extrication training is essential for firefighter and patient safety. Regular hands-on training ensures crews can safely and efficiently operate extrication equipment, recognize hazards in modern vehicles, stabilize vehicles, and coordinate patient removal.

Consistent training improves firefighter proficiency, reduces extrication times, strengthens incident command and crew coordination, and prepares firefighters for increasingly complex vehicle crashes, including electric and alternative-fuel vehicles.
Regular training ensures our firefighters are prepared to perform when a life depends on it.

Thank you to Kenney Automotive Towing and Recovery for providing the vehicles for us to train with. The Kenney Automotive Towing team also used this opportunity to conduct their own company training for their wrecker operators.

NEVER FORGET
Today, the Wells Fire Department joins communities across our nation in remembering September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the lives lost, the survivors, the families forever changed, and the countless first responders who answered the call.
We especially remember the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while responding to the attacks in New York City.
Their courage, selflessness, and commitment to protecting others will forever be a part of the fire service.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
September 11, 2001 — 25 years later, their sacrifice remains with us.
