We are saddened to hear that Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury passed away this morning at Maine Medical Center.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Assistant Chief Woodbury, as well as to the members of the Searsmont Fire Department.

The Office of State Fire Marshal is saddened to learn of the passing of 76-year-old Wayne Woodbury on Sunday morning June 14, 2026 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury was among the many firefighters and emergency responders who responded to the May 15, 2026, fire at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont.

The Office of State Fire Marshal extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the members of the Searsmont Fire Department during this difficult time. The investigation into the Robbins Lumber fire remains ongoing.

It has been a busy week for our department!

Notable Incidents
- Wells High School: An overheating kiln activated a sprinkler head in the room. The water discharged from the activated sprinkler head absorbed the radiant heat emitted by the kiln and rapidly converted to steam. This process removed heat from the area and prevented the contents of the room from igniting until our crews verified there was no active fire, manually shut down the kiln, and secured the sprinkler system to minimize water damage.
- Mutual Aid to Berwick: Tank 2 responded to assist Berwick Fire Department with a scrap metal fire on Route 236. Over the course of approximately nine hours, Tank 2 hauled a total of 54,000 gallons of water to support suppression efforts.
- Outside Fire: Crews were dispatched to a local pit for a reported machine fire. Upon arrival, crews found a section of timber construction mats on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread to additional construction mats nearby.

Training- Our members completed the following training this week:
- Pro Board Fire Instructor II
- Pro Board NFPA 1403 Live Fire Instructor
- Blue Card Command Train-the-Trainer
- Tri-Town Annual Live Fire Training

In total, our members completed nearly 140 hours of training this week alone.

Late last night, the Wells Fire Department, Wells Police, and Ogunquit Fire Department were dispatched to Ocean Ave to investigate a boat on the rocks. The investigation request was initiated by the US Coast Guard.

Wells Engine 3, Truck 6, Chief 2, Ogunquit Marine 1 and Ogunquit C1 responded on the call with Wells Police.

Upon arrival there was a 30 foot cuddy cabin boat that was stuck on the rocks with one soul on board, taking on impact from the waves, and in danger of over-turning. An assessment was conducted by Ogunquit Marine 1 from their position on the seaward side of the vessel, fire personnel from the shore, and the utilization of drone technology by fire department personnel. It was quickly determined that a rescue would need be initiated from the shore by Wells Fire Department members due to the rocky area preventing a boat to boat transfer from the vessel to Marine 1.

A rescuer was able to board the vessel, confirm there was one soul on board, determine that the soul on board required medical attention and would not be able to self assist in a vessel to shore rescue. An in water vessel to vessel rescue to Marine 1 was conducted safely and successfully by Wells and Ogunquit Fire Department crews. The patient was brought to Perkins Cove and transported to Portsmouth Hospital by Wells EMS with non life-threatening injuries.

The seamless interagency operability of the Wells and Ogunquit Fire Departments was instrumental in the safe and successful life saving rescue in extremely dangerous conditions. Great work by the crews involved.

The operation of a primary drone with a secondary drone available on scene was crucial to continuously monitor the soul on board, the rescuers and assess the conditions they were operating in.

The vessel remains unsecured off Ocean Ave until removal efforts can be completed safely.

We extend our best wishes to the individual involved for a quick and full recovery.

Today, four of our members stood shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of firefighters from across the country to honor Boston Firefighter Robert ‘BK’ Kilduff Jr., who tragically lost his life in the line of duty last week.

Our thoughts are with Firefighter Kilduff Jr’s family, friends, and the Boston Fire Department.

At 0741 this morning our department responded with Wells Police and Wells EMS to Mile Rd at the intersection of Wells Plaza for a motor vehicle crash, rollover, with entrapment.

Upon arrival of Engine 3 and Engine 7, crews had a two vehicle crash with one vehicle on its side and one patient trapped in that vehicle. A recall was struck for station coverage. Crews stabilized the vehicle and extricated the patient from that vehicle in 13 minutes from the time of arrival on scene. Two patients were transported to local hospitals by Wells EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

At the time of the call, a career member coming off shift was still at the station and responded with the on duty crew due to the initial report of entrapment. The member of the crew was a valuable set of additional hands to conduct the operation of vehicle stabilization and extrication in a timely manner.

While crews were demobilizing at the crash scene, a call came in for a residential carbon monoxide alarm activation. The off duty members who were covering the station on the recall from the motor vehicle crash responded with Truck 6, along with Engine 7 that was able to clear from the motor vehicle crash and respond. Crews investigated and found no presence of carbon monoxide in the residence, and the activation was likely due to detector malfunction.

Great all around teamwork and dedication to our community by our members today. We wish for a speedy recovery for those injured.

The members of the Wells Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the brothers and sisters of the Boston Fire Department following the tragic line-of-duty death of Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr., who lost his life while operating at a 3rd alarm fire last evening.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Boston Fire Department and their families through this difficult time.

Last night, the Boston Fire Department and our entire fire service family suffered a devastating loss with the passing of Rescue 2 firefighter Bobby Kilduff while battling a fire in Dorchester.

Bobby was more than just a firefighter. He was a Marine Corps veteran, a dedicated union brother, a proud Boston firefighter for 24 years, and a man who spent his life serving others. Born in 1972, Bobby responded to thousands of incidents over his career with Rescue Company 2, one of the busiest companies in the city. He understood the danger of this job and faced it head-on every single tour.

But beyond the helmet and turnout gear, Bobby was a father first. He loved his children more than anything in this world. Whether it was family trips to Disney, time spent together, or simply being there for them, his children were his pride and joy.

Bobby also cared deeply about the union and the brotherhood of the fire service, following in the footsteps of his father, who dedicated his own life to the profession before tragically losing his battle with occupational cancer years ago. We pray Bobby is now reunited with his dad and watching over his children, his family, and all of us still answering the call.

This loss is hitting hard. It reminds every firefighter and every family connected to this profession just how dangerous this job truly is. We all know the risks, but sometimes life changes in an instant and brings that reality crashing back home.

Please keep Bobby’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the members of Local 718 and the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

This week is EMS week and last night at the Board of Selectmen’s Meeting we proudly recognized members of our team who received the Maine EMS Phoenix Awards for two separate events in 2025.

The Maine EMS Phoenix Award honors licensed clinicians and dispatchers whose critical skills, knowledge, and actions directly contribute to the successful resuscitation of a patient who suffered a non-traumatic, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Our hearts are heavy tonight as the fire service in Maine mourns the loss of a firefighter in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters, families and friends of those who responded to the fire in Searsmont today, and the healthcare providers who are caring for those were injured.
