🏫 School Zone Safety Matters

As students head back to school, we want to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of slowing down and staying alert in and around school zones.

School zones are designed to protect our children as they walk, bike, or travel to and from school. Please know the signs, understand when the 20 MPH school-zone speed limit is in effect, and be prepared to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

A few extra seconds of patience can make a lasting difference. Whether you’re a parent, student, driver, or member of our community, we all share the responsibility of keeping our kids safe.

📚 BACK TO SCHOOL! 🎒

As students and teachers across Chelan County head back to the classroom, we want to remind everyone that school is back in session and that means more buses, pedestrians, bicyclists, and families on our roads.

Please slow down, stay alert, and respect posted school zones and speed limits. Watch carefully for students crossing streets and remember to stop when school buses have their red lights flashing and stop signs extended.
A few extra seconds of caution can make a lasting difference in keeping our students safe.

CCSO Enhances Event Safety with Drone Detection Technology

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is continuing its commitment to responsible and effective use of technology with the addition of a Dronetag RIDER to the CCSO Drone Team. The portable device provides real-time detection and tracking of nearby drones and, through the Dronetag application, can provide information such as a drone’s location, flight path, speed, heading, and available operator takeoff location. Detection information is also logged, providing documentation that may assist with follow-up investigations.

Unauthorized or suspicious drone activity is an emerging public-safety concern, particularly during large gatherings such as parades, sporting events, festivals, and community celebrations. Incorporating the Dronetag RIDER into event-security planning will enhance CCSO’s ability to detect, assess, document,
and appropriately respond to potentially suspicious activity before it develops into a greater threat.

The technology will be available for CCSO events throughout the year and will serve as an additional tool to complement traditional law-enforcement practices. Its use reflects the agency’s ongoing effort to responsibly adopt technology that improves situational awareness, supports deputies in the field, and enhances the safety of residents and visitors.

“As law enforcement continues to face new challenges in the modern age, we have a responsibility to evaluate technology that can make our communities safer,” said Chief Ryan Moody. “The Dronetag RIDER gives our personnel another resource to help maintain awareness and make informed decisions
while providing professional service to the community.”

School Resource Deputies

School safety remains a priority for the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, and we are proud of the deputies serving our local schools.

Deputy Javier Reyna was recently selected to serve as the School Resource Deputy for Cascade School District. Deputy Nigel Hunter transitions from that role at Cascade back to Chelan School District, where he previously served, while Deputy Dominic Mutch continues serving as Cashmere School District’s School Resource Deputy.

These positions are about more than safety they are about building trust, developing relationships, and being a positive presence for students and staff. We are fortunate to have three deputies of strong character, professionalism, and compassion serving in these important roles.

The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to investing in school safety and supporting safe, positive learning environments for our students and staff.

A positive example of what continued collaboration can accomplish.

Last month, Chelan County Sheriff’s Office deputies, working with the U.S. Forest Service as Forest Service Deputies, assisted with clearing a homeless encampment at the end of Hay Canyon. It is important to clarify that this was U.S. Forest Service property, not County property, and any action on the site required USFS approval and coordination. Following the clearing, the Forest Service secured the necessary funding and executed an operations plan to remove the debris, garbage, and waste left behind which was completed on Thursday.

While the process did not move as quickly as many would have liked, situations like this involve logistical, jurisdictional, and funding challenges that can slow the process. What matters is that the goal was never lost. We appreciate the U.S. Forest Service for their continued efforts, partnership, and commitment to seeing this through and restoring the area.

We are incredibly grateful to the Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council for their generosity and compassion toward our neighbors impacted by the Little Giant Fire. CDCAC donated 60 $50 Safeway gift cards to help families facing the challenges that come with displacement and loss.

This represents more than a donation it represents what happens when community partners come together to support one another during difficult times. We sincerely appreciate CDCAC Executive Director Alan Walker and the entire organization for continuing to help people and change lives. Thank you for standing with our community when it matters most.

Chelan County sheriff’s Office is requesting information regarding an overdue hiker.

Chad T Pietrok, 27 years old.

Chad was last seen at the Ingalls Creek Trail Head on 8/11/26. His planned route was Ingalls Creek, Esmeralda Basin, Vann Epps, Jack Creek and Eight Mile Trails. He was wearing either a yellow or orange outer layer and possibly a blue backpack along with carrying a yellow or grey tent. If you were in the area and may have seen Chad, email [email protected]

Chelan County Law Enforcement Respond to Dangerous Driving Incident

On August 17, 2026, at approximately 9:40 p.m., a Chelan County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a vehicle observed traveling at an estimated 80–100 mph on East Woodin Avenue. The vehicle failed to yield and continued southbound on SR-150 before entering U.S. Highway 97 and crossing into
Douglas County.

The vehicle eventually stopped in the middle of the Beebe Bridge and was found unoccupied. Deputies contacted a registered owner, who reported that her husband was the likely driver and expressed concern that he may have entered the river from the bridge.

Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington State Patrol coordinated an area search. WSP later located the male registered owner near Chelan Falls Park. He was taken into custody without incident and transported for medical evaluation. A Designated Crisis Responder was also requested.

During the investigation, the man reportedly acknowledged entering the river from the bridge. Deputies also observed indicators consistent with possible alcohol impairment. A search warrant was obtained for a blood sample, which was collected and submitted for testing.

Charges for Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle and Driving Under the Influence have been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review. The investigation remains subject to prosecutorial review, and any person accused of a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the coordinated efforts of the Washington State Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, medical personnel, crisis-response resources, and dispatchers. These collaborative efforts reflect our shared commitment to protecting the community, keeping our roadways safe, and responding professionally and compassionately to incidents involving potential danger to the public and individuals involved.
