Westerly Fire Department Responds to Fatal Plane Crash Near Airport Road

On 5/18, shortly after noon, Westerly Dispatch alerted our volunteers to reports of a plane crash, initially believed to involve a fire.

It was quickly determined that the aircraft had crashed in a field near Stop & Shop on Airport Road, on the opposite side of the airport.

Engine 3 arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed there was no fire, while also requesting an additional tone for manpower. As a precaution, crews stretched a 2½-inch handline while Westerly Ambulance EMS personnel tended to the pilot. Tragically, the pilot later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Representatives from T.F. Green Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), NTSB, FAA, and Rhode Island State Police, Westerly Police Department all responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the NTSB.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Last evening, volunteers of the Westerly Fire Department had the honor of participating in the Good Night Lights event at with Engine 2, alongside the Lake Mishnock Fire/Rescue and Hopkins Hill Fire Department.

Good Night Lights is a special nightly event where first responders gather outside the hospital and shine their emergency lights toward the patient rooms, giving children and families inside a bright and uplifting show of support before bedtime. The tradition serves as a reminder to the young patients that an entire community is standing behind them during their stay.

We are proud to take part in such a meaningful event and help bring a few smiles to the children and families at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Honoring Milestones & Celebrating Volunteer Service at WFD

This week’s meeting was a special one as we took time to recognize the dedication of our volunteer members and celebrate some truly remarkable milestones.

A packed house gathered on Tuesday as we honored Asst. Chief (Ret.) Tom Keena for an incredible 70 years of service, and Asst. Chief (Ret.) Bob Long for 60 years of service to the community.

We also recognized Lt. J. Izzi for reaching his 10-year anniversary and presented him with his years of service pin. FF P. Grube also marked 10 years of dedicated volunteer service but was unable to attend.

Moments like these highlight the commitment, tradition, and pride of our volunteer firefighters and the Westerly Fire Department family.

With warmer weather approaching and river activity increasing, volunteers from the Westerly Fire Department spent Tuesday evening training on river operations in preparation for the upcoming season.

We’re proud of the dedication our members continue to show to stay prepared and ready to serve the community safely on the water.

The Westerly Fire Department would like to give special recognition to President Britner for the tremendous work she has done promoting Project Fire Buddies throughout the community and helping expand its reach across New England.

We also want to sincerely thank the Westerly Lions Club for their generous donation and support of this incredible cause. Community partnerships and support like this are what help make programs such as Project Fire Buddies possible.

Excellent work by all involved!

Members of our Westerly, RI Chapter have been active in spreading the word about Project Fire Buddies in the New England area. 😁

Recently, the Chapter was guest speaker at a large joint Lions meeting. The Lions Club hosted a raffle and donated the funds to PFB. ❤️

We are thankful for our Westerly Chapter whose passion and enthusiasm is bringing PFB to people on the East Coast! 👍

Today, the Westerly Fire Department joins communities across the nation in honoring the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

In observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, our flag is lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset in remembrance of their courage, dedication, and service.

We stand in solidarity with their families, friends, and departments—never forgotten.

Westerly Fire Department is proud to be taking part in the Touch-A-Truck event at the Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA as part of their Water Safety Day!

Engine 1 is on site along with volunteer Firefighters Lucas Pityer, Cam Reyes, and Sarah Britner, giving families a hands-on look at the tools and training we use to keep our community safe.

Attendees have the opportunity to check out our Water Rescue equipment, including Swift Water Rescue suits and Mustang Ice Rescue suits, and learn more about how our members operate during water rescue operations in the Pawcatuck River, as well as ice rescues. Firefighters are also spending time talking with the public about firefighting operations, turnout gear, and what it takes to be a volunteer.

Our team will be on site until 12:00 PM if anyone would like to stop by and check it out!

We’d like to thank the YMCA for hosting a great event and everyone who has come out to spend the day with us. Community events like this are a great way to connect, educate, and keep Westerly safe! 🚒 🌊
