To clear up any concerns over recent social media posts regarding one of our officers.
When the officer applied for a position with the Police Department, they disclosed the prior allegation. Standard practice by our office calls for a follow-up investigation before further consideration for hiring on any candidate. We performed an investigation and determined that no formal finding related to the claims had ever been made. At that time, as the resume and experience of the proposed applicant were commensurate with the job, we asked the candidate to submit to a polygraph as a condition of employment, which he agreed to. The results of the examination were pass. Given the disclosure, a pass on the polygraph report, employment with the Department was offered, subject to a standard six-month probationary term.
Furthermore, the officer passed probation and field training and was placed in a permanent full-time position. The officer came to us with several years' experience, served in the United States Marine Corp, and holds several certifications through OPOTA as an instructor. Which is an asset to the department for in-house training.
The officer has been with us for nearly one year and since the hiring of the officer, they have been promoted to a leadership role and have been a mentor to new officers with less experience. They have volunteered numerous hours with community events and have created a therapy K9 program within the department, utilizing their own K9 and personal monies, at zero cost to the community or police budget. The K9 is to assist victims of crime, police officers in time of crisis, school functions, and our elderly community. The community holds high regards for the officer and the K9, as does the leadership of the Williamsburg Police Department.
The village administration unanimously supported the process and the hiring of this officer and will continue to support this officer. We are proud of our police department and will continue to support or officers. The Village of Williamsburg is a small and close community. The conduct of "all" of our employees (particularly our police officers) is something that we hold to the highest of standards. Any reported behavior that is inconsistent with our Code of Ethics is promptly investigated and addressed.
