Memorial Day is not just another long weekend.

It’s a day set aside to remember the men and women who never made it home. The people who gave their lives serving this country, leaving behind families, friends, and futures that should have been theirs.

The freedom we enjoy every day came at a real cost for many American families. Memorial Day is a reminder that for some, the sacrifice never ended. As we spend time with family and friends today, I hope we also take a moment to reflect on the reason this day exists and honor those who gave everything for our country.

May we never forget them.

🚨 Traffic Change Alert🚨
The intersection of Highway 81 and Tom Miller/Tanner‘s Bridge has been on of concern for a number of years now. GDOT has a roundabout planned there and it has been in the works for several years now. While GDOT has finally started right of way acquisition and is planning to let the construction contract next April, there continued to be concerns with safety there.
After much discussion about possible temporary solutions, it has been posted that GDOT will be temporarily converting the intersection to a four way stop on June 2, 2026. This is a temporary solution until the roundabout is built, with construction slated to start next spring.

Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to remember the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

In Barrow County, we especially remember Deputy Ronald Eugene Bays of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, who gave his life in the line of duty. We also remember former Barrow County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Lena Marshall, who later made the ultimate sacrifice while serving with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

These men and women put on the badge knowing the risks, yet still chose to serve and protect their communities each day.

We are blessed to have outstanding law enforcement officers serving across Barrow County, including the Sheriff’s Office and our local police departments. Today, we honor the fallen, pray for their families, and remember the sacrifice behind the badge.

May we never forget.

This week, we recognize National Police Week and honor the men and women in law enforcement who put on the badge each day to serve and protect our communities.

I’m proud to say that here in Barrow County, we have some of the very best. Our deputies and officers serve with professionalism, integrity, and a genuine commitment to protecting our community and the people who call it home.

Thank you to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, our local police departments, and every law enforcement officer serving across Barrow County. Your service, sacrifice, and dedication do not go unnoticed.

The Silver Seniors prom was such an amazing event. I’m blessed to have played a small role in such a fun afternoon. Thank you to the Barrow County Senior Center staff for all they do to provide so many great activities for their members. And thank you to the Winder Public Library for helping put the event on.

Shout out to the Barrow County roads and bridges department for installing these flashing stop signs at Bill Rutledge and Carl-Bethlehem Rd after a series of accidents there.
While the longer term fix is a roundabout, hopefully this interim measure will increase visibility and awareness to reduce accidents.
