Who was David Penington?

He was a leader who chose compassion, evidence, and action when it mattered most, and his impact continues to save lives today.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, the 25th anniversary, we remember the people behind the progress - and the legacy that continues through the Penington Institute.

💜 Awareness starts with education, and education starts with sharing trusted resources.
As part of YCADC's commitment to keeping our community informed, we're proud to participate in and amplify national and international prevention campaigns that bring attention to critical public health issues affecting communities everywhere—including right here in Yuma County.
One of those initiatives is International Overdose Awareness Day, led globally by the Penington Institute since 2012. The Penington Institute, a non-profit committed to freedom from serious drug harms, has been quietly leading International Overdose Awareness Day since 2012, transforming a single event into a global day of action.
By sharing evidence-based information and connecting our community with trusted resources, YCADC continues to support awareness, prevention, and healthy conversations that strengthen families and create a safer Yuma County.
Together, we can learn more, talk openly, support one another, and help prevent overdose before it happens.
💜 Awareness leads to action. Action saves lives.

💜 August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day — a global day of remembrance, awareness, and action.
Every overdose impacts more than one person. It affects families, friends, coworkers, classmates, and entire communities. Here in Yuma County, we recognize the lives lost, support those left behind, and renew our commitment to preventing future tragedies.
At YCADC, we believe prevention starts with education, awareness, and community connection. Through year-round outreach, youth programs, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with local organizations, we're working to reduce stigma, increase understanding, and connect people with resources that can save lives.
International Overdose Awareness Day is more than a day of remembrance—it's a call to action. Together, we can create conversations that matter, support those who are struggling, and build a healthier, safer Yuma County for everyone.
Join us this August as we honor lives, raise awareness, and work toward a future where fewer families experience the pain of overdose loss.
💜 Every life matters. Every conversation matters. Every action matters.

💜 Small actions can make a big difference.
As YCADC joins communities around the world in recognizing the 25th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day, we're encouraging Yuma County residents to take action, raise awareness, and help save lives.
Whether it's learning something new, supporting a neighbor, or starting a conversation, each step helps build a healthier, safer community for everyone.
Here are 10 ways you can get involved this August:
✔️ Attend an overdose awareness event
✔️ Participate in a candlelight vigil or remembrance activity
✔️ Learn how naloxone (Narcan) can help save a life
✔️ Wear or light up purple for awareness
✔️ Create art that inspires hope and healing
✔️ Observe a moment of silence for those we've lost
✔️ Share prevention and recovery resources
✔️ Help break the stigma surrounding substance use disorders
✔️ Support families impacted by overdose
✔️ Promote local prevention, treatment, and recovery services
At YCADC, we believe prevention starts with education, awareness, compassion, and community connection. Together, we can create a future where fewer lives are lost and more people find the support they need.
What action will you take this August? 💜
