Today in Hungarian history, we commemorate the death of Hunyadi János, who - according to legend - died on this day in 1456 from a plague that broke out after his great victory in the Battle of Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade).

Hunyadi's remains were buried in the Árpád-era St. Mihály Cathedral in Gyulafehérvár. But his tomb was repeatedly disturbed by Ottoman, Crimean Tatar, and Wallachian marauders in the 17th century, during the tragic twists and turns of Transylvanian history.

With the death of Hunyadi János, one of the greatest generals, who devoted almost his entire life, fortune, and political and military talent to the defense of the southern borders of Hungary passed away.

Besides a statue in Prizren, Hunyadi is also depicted on one of the stained glass windows of the Mother Theresa Cathedral in Pristina. His face can be seen just above the shoulders of his ally Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.

András Baka elected as the new president of Hungary by the parliament.

Dr András Baka was today elected as the new president of Hungary. He served previously as judge at the European Court of Human Rights and was the president of the Hungarian Supreme Court.

The official currency of Hungary, the Forint was introduced exactly 80 years ago.

The Forint brought stability after the hyperinflation following the Second World War.

Hungary has an obligation to introduce the Euro as an EU Member State, but without a deadline. Current plans foresee the switch to the Euro in the beginning of the 2030's.

Hungarian low cost carrier Wizz Air today announced the opening of a base in Prishtina.

The base will operate from November and with the investment of 100 million euros will create 40 jobs directly and further 300 indirectly.

The new base will allow the opening of new destinations and more frequent flights on existing routes by the airline.

We congratulate all participants of the negotiations from the side of Wizz Air/ Prishtina International Airport - Adem Jashari (Limak Kosova) and the government of the Republic of Kosovo!

In July 1456, 570 years ago János Hunyadi and his allies seccesfully defended the castle of Nándorfehérvár, today's Belgrade.

The castle of Nándorfehérvár was the largest and most fortified border stronghold of Hungary, regarded as the southern gate of the kingdom and being considered one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. Captain in Chief of Hungary, János Hunyadi, who previously collaborated with Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, had garrisoned and strengthened the fortress city at his own expense. The defenders, led by Mihály Szilágyi, put up a determined resistance against the larger Ottoman army from 4 July. The siege lasted for several weeks, during which both sides suffered heavy losses. On 14 July, Hunyadi's relief force destroyed a Turkish flotilla on the Danube, and Hunyadi entered to the fortress with fresh troops. The Ottomans launched a major assault on 21 July, but it was repulsed. Wounded Mehmed II was compelled to lift the siege and retreat on 22 July. This victory boosted the morale of European forces and was seen as a turning point in their efforts as it provided a crucial buffer and halted Ottoman expansion towards Europe beyond the Balkans for 70 years.

János Hunyadi's successful defence of Belgrade earned him widespread acclaim and respect as a military leader though he died of the plague a few weeks later. The battle's significance also extended beyond its immediate aftermath, as it demonstrated the importance of fi****ms and artillery in warfare, heralding a new era in military technology and tactics.
